Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2022

According to the website, it looks like Garrett the lesser kudu is no longer at the zoo. Idk what exactly what happened to him, but he most likely passed away since he is really old.(speculation.) Additional news, the website lists the brown pelican and wood duck off-exhibit but I saw them both this spring. I think I remember the pelican was listed off exhibit already this spring so I think the birds were originally off exhibit for avian flu but then were let back.(speculation)

New bamboo habitat, desert rock habitat and buttrest tree and burrow habitat coming to Zoo. Look like will house reptile. Not sure what spesies

I was at the zoo today and a worker at the reptile house was talking with two people about putting in new terrariums and was explaining where they would be installed. So yeah those are probably for the RDC.

There were also yellow-headed day geckos in a terrarium that looked noticeable different from the others in the same section (black background, no rounded corners).

A sign for eastern screech-owl has been added to American Trail. It's located in front of the exhibit connected to the building next to the bald eagle exhibit that has held hawks in the past.

Edit: Oh and starting this Friday (July 1st) the zoo will transition to their summer hours, and will now be open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

On July 22nd, the zoo announced that their maned wolves moved from the Cheetah Conservation Station area to the American Trail.

This has been a thing for a while, however I'm not sure if this counts as an "official" announcement. That said, it's a weird choice to move Quito down to the American Trail, but not as weird as it could have been.
