Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian National Zoo News 2025

*The Canada lynxes went on exhibit for the first time today. It is three siblings (I believe all males): Rocky, Yukon, and Jasper. The exhibit seems to be a good amount of space for them, they're visible to visitors, and there's hiding spots for them as well.
*Ceba the new female Amur tiger was on exhibit today too.
*The bat-eared foxes were off exhibit while they paved the pathway in front of their exhibit recently. Today, they were back on exhibit.
*I know the zoo was down to one black footed ferret, female Pumpkin Pie, but I'm curious if the zoo got another one recently. I can't be sure, but the one I saw on exhibit was getting close to the glass, standing up, and showing a braver demeanor than I've seen before. Does anyone know?

According to documents submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission, the Zoo is planning to undergo two infrastructure updates in FY27.

Great Flight Aviary - there will be a new accessible ramp installed from the outdoor walkway up the current walkway linking the GRA to the Bird House.

Elephant Trails - Some yard work is to occur to fix consistent runoff and drainage issues.
  • Yard 1 Pool - the pool is to be aligned and graded preventing erosion and substrate from entering the pool. The pool itself will also be re graded to a more gentle slope allowing the elephants to gradually wade into the pool.
  • Yard 2 Pool - this "off exhibit" area pool will be filled in allowing for additional space
  • Yard 3 is unaffected
  • Yard 4 - the large yard that extends from Asia Trail to the American Trail entrance will see the most improvements. A new grading pattern will direct water to existing storm water management systems. A new shade tree is set to be planted near the transfer gate and Bird Plateau bridge.

The news I have is irrespective of any government shutdown - that's what I was referring to at least. I'm sure there could be some developments that occurred over the last three weeks.
I’ve heard a rumor from someone I know there; does it happen to do with their pandas?
