Smithsonian National Zoo Smithsonian's National Zoo News 2024

One thing I was curious about ...
from what I see up until the 2010s the Zoo did a 'Meet the Kiwi' programme as it had for years.
Now however I haven't seen much about such a programme going on at the zoo.
Has it since been discontinued?
[Not of much urgency to myself ... just curious]

Does anyone have an idea yet about that construction near Great Cats? I know that most of the construction in the circle itself is purely infrastructure, but that field next to the exhibits sure is starting to look a bit like an exhibit of sorts.
When I was there in mid-May, the keeper told me that they are going to be cat exhibits--I remember one of them will be a Lynx, but I can't remember the other one.

There was a story awhile back about how New Zealand was not happy with the treatment of Kiwis at an institution--allowing people to hold them and touch them--it wasn't at National. In any case, the places that have Kiwi now are more hands off. From what I have seen, Kiwis tend to get a bit stressed when they are brought out of their dens and held; probably better for their welfare to let them be.

It has, the Zoo no longer houses Kiwi. They are kept at their front royal campus.

Ooh, that's exciting! They used to have a caracal and I would love if they brought that species back. They're listed on the website under 'animals' but says "This animal is not currently on exhibit," so I'd be happy to see them again!

If they do add one or two more cat species, National Zoo must be among the AZA accredited zoos with the most species of cat. They already have lions, tigers, cheetahs, clouded leopards, fishing cats, Pallas cats, bobcats, and sand cats.

How sad… last time I was at the zoo the sea lions were very personable and seemingly left a big impression with the visitors at the underwater viewing. Wishing the best for her care team.

Hello all,

I'm trying to plan a trip down to DC for my little ones to see the pandas at the end of the year. Anyone have a best guess for when they may be here and in previews?

It seems like they would certainly want them fully open for the holidays, but just wanted to try to plan out future travel.

Thanks!!

No idea when they will be arriving, and when the public will get to see them.

Just wanted to let everyone know that tomorrow will be Maharani the elephants birthday! My source is from the Elephant Database website and a previous article from the zoos website.

Plan for early 2024. Once they get here sometime in the Fall/Winter there is going to be a 30 day quarantine where they are inside only and after that the zoo is going to do an adjustment period. I’d say that’s at least 60 days of them being here and not on view. When they do open to the public, there is going to be millions of people flocking to see them and you will wait in line for hours. Unless your little ones can handle the wait and the crowds I’d say hold off for the first two months of them being on exhibit.

I’ve been wondering how many exactly of the zoo’s elephants are breeding viable? I know that Trong Nee and Nee Linh are definitely. Also I know that Trong Née and Nee Linh were going to hopefully breed with Spike but have they been fully introduced yet to each other? And finally does Spike really have a good chance of still having more offsprings? I know he currently has none that are living.

Yes, the girls and Spike have been introduced and nowadays it’s the three of them living together. They have been together for quite a while (I saw them all together last November).

So does this mean that the other girls are not being used to breed or are not breed-able? I know a few of them are pretty old. Also have Trong Nee and Nee Linh been introduced to the other girls yet or are they not planning on doing so?

Three of the girls(Bozie, Swarna and Kamala) are all 50 years old and well past their windows of fertility. Maharani is 34 and technically still able to conceive however the SSP has removed her recommendation due to the length in which she hasn’t fallen pregnant. As for Nhi Linh and Trong Nhi they are both recommended to breed with spike and the staff have said they both did breed back in I think it was March or April but no news has been released as to what has come of that. They have been introduced to Spike, Bozie and Kamala. Both of them have shared the same space with spike but only Nhi Linh has shared the same space with Bozie. The goal would be to have one large integrated herd however introductions take time depending on the animals and personalities involved.
