Smithsonian's National Zoo

Just got back from the National Zoo today, and had a few thoughts. IMO, the zoo is great, but for the National Zoo of the USA, it's really lacking in notable species such as giraffes and rhinos as well as superb exhibits in many areas. Throughout the next few days, I'll be making a masterplan of what I would do to the zoo. If it gets too far fetched, feel free to move this to the fantasy zoos forums

If you have ideas, I'd LOVE for you to reply with them.

First off, if there isn't room, the property could be moved (idk where tho). I'll try to make it fit with the current property, but I'm not sure it'll work entirely. The Smithsonian is government and sponsor funded, so I think it could be possible. Keep in mind that this is just what I would do, not anything that is at all likely to happen.

The first change I'd make is changing the great cats area into another building, and including a few more species. Move the cheetahs here, as well as lynx, jaguars, and snow leopards. This building would be a staple of the zoo, and in addition to drawing inspiration from older "Lion Houses" would also provide ample room and welfare for it's inhabitants. This area would be located on a "carnivore plaza", with several adjacent carnivoran exhibits.

Once again, feel free to share thoughts below, and I'll be covering more in my next post!

After the exit of the Big Cat House, the plaza at the exit would lead to several more taxonomic areas in the place of the current Claws and Paws pathway, Lemur Island, Prairie Dogs, and Amazonia.

First would be an area for canids and canid look-alikes, including Spotted hyenas, timber wolves, and maned wolves.

In the place of most of Amazonia and some of the current American Trail, I'd make an area for ursidae. I'm not sure which species could be included, but Brown bears, Polar bears, sloth bears, and giant pandas all work.

After this, I'd love to bring some iconic large mammals to the zoo. I'd expand elephant trails into the surrounding areas, and make it a large mammal house for a bachelor herd of African Elephants (replacing the current Asian elephants) and include hippos, rhinos, okapis, and giraffes as well.
