On the occasion of Giving Tuesday, the Duke Lemur Center posted on social media about their efforts together with Madagascar’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development to provide care to Coquerel's Sifakas seized from smuggling attempts. They mention 3 different groups of seized sifakas, the most recent of which had only 1 survivor out of 10 individuals seized. At the moment, there seems to be a total of 7 sifakas under care.
Giving Tuesday 2025: Help Save Smuggled Sifakas - Duke Lemur Center
This raises a lot of questions as to why these animals were captured and what was their destination... At any rate, the fact that they are all Coquerel's sifakas specifically could prove to be weirdly convenient for the future of DLC's sifaka breeding program.
