Snakes Downunder have announced the arrival of five Radiated Tortoises. This species can now be found at Darling Downs Zoo, Wildlife HQ, Snakes Downunder and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures in Queensland. From their Facebook page:
Look what I picked up today! Five young radiated tortoises A critically endangered Madagascan species. These five were part of a group that were taken from the wild illegally and intercepted by customs in Hong Kong destined for the pet trade or worse, food markets and their beautiful shells used as ornaments. Their final trip to Zoo and Aquarium Association member zoos has been the result of a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work by a number of zoos, the species coordinator, the reptile taxon advisory group and ZAA staff. @ Snakes Downunder Reptile Park and Zoo

Snakes Downunder have done a temporary swap of male Komodo Dragons with Australia Zoo. Their male Naga has moved to the Sunshine Coast to be paired with their female whilst they have received Australia Zoo’s male, Gilli.
Meet our new Komodo dragon, Gili. Only temporary. Naga has gone off to Australia Zoo to meet a young lady and we have one of their boys while he’s away. @snakesdownunder

I like what they have done with the names. Naga is the scientific name and Gili is Gili Motang which is the Island they are found on.
Except that “Gili” means island so not named after a specific island as such.

They are found on an island called Gili Motang.
I understand that. However "Gili" is an Indonesian word for "island" (or more particularly "small island" as all of Indonesia is made up of islands) so calling it Gili does not indicate it is named after Motang Island. It is like calling a Murray River cod "River" rather than "Murray".

So where did they get the name from??? Gili = island = name for native lizard found on island.

My point is simply if they wished to name it after the island they should have called it "Motang", not "Gili".

@MRJ
But they didn’t! and it’s not called Motang Gili
What's not called Motang Gili? That makes no sense at all. Gili Motang means Motang Island. Motang Gili makes no sense in Indonesian.

If they called it Motang it would be Motang but it’s called Gili and the closest thing that is called Gili is the island they are found on.

This is getting silly so this is definitely my final post on the subject.

1. You said they were naming it after Gili Motang; I am simply pointing out that if that was their intention they have failed because "Gili" means "Island" and Indonesia has thousands of "Gili's".
2. Further that animal cannot have come from Gili Motang, as it must have been captive bred. There are a few Komodo dragons on Gili Motang as there are on about 20 other islands nearby, but it is more likely this animal's ancestors came from Komodo, Flores, or Rinca.

Probably my fault for being obscure.
