@Baldur

I have seen New Zealand Fur Seals at 1 zoo:

1- Sydney Aquarium (Australia) – New Zealand Fur Seal – 2007

My Icelandic friend @Baldur gave up being a 'zoo nerd' years ago and he now works on cruise ships that take visitors on expeditions to the southern regions of the world such as Antarctica. His images from Sydney Aquarium (Australia) have a species lineup that he claims contained the following 4 species: New Zealand Fur Seal, Australian Sea Lion, Afro-Australian Fur Seal and Subantarctic Fur Seal. I can't find anyone to confirm or deny that impressive list of 4 pinniped species all together, before this facility went in for Dugongs, but someone did tell me that New Zealand Fur Seal was highly likely but they weren't sure about the Subantarctic Fur Seal and therefore I've left it off my pinniped species list for now. :)

@Baldur

I visited Sydney Aquarium in 2008 and I did see all four species you mentioned: New Zealand Fur Seal, Australian Sea Lion, Afro-Australian Fur Seal and Subantarctic Fur Seal.

So I would say it is very likely you did see all four as well

I have photos of all 4 species here: https://goo.gl/photos/nENjFHKRGaVxUCLS7 although only a bad photo of the Subantarcic fur seal, as they never got out of the water during my visit.

I'm also very happy to have seen the leopard seal in Taronga in that same week! :)

I've seen 'Tree Kangaroos' at 33 zoos. There are more than a dozen species, but in all the zoos I've been to I've only ever come across two of them. One day I'd love to gaze at a Grizzled or a Lumholtz's, but that would be a rare occasion indeed!

One thing I noticed, while spending an hour or so choosing photos and writing up this analysis, is that hardly any zoos give Tree Kangaroos height in their exhibits. Most of the climbing opportunities are restricted to perhaps 8 feet in height, usually via a series of dead branches bolted to the ground. Detroit Zoo is one remarkable exception to that trend.

My viewing of Tree Kangaroos peaked in 2010 when I saw the species at 11 zoos on that summer's zoo trek. I've only seen the species at 5 zoos out of 120 in Europe, which is surprising, and none of the Scandinavian zoos I toured in 2022 had Tree Kangaroos.

33 zoos (24 Matschie’s, 9 Goodfellow’s)

1- Perth Zoo (Australia) – Matschie's Tree Kangaroo – 1987
2- Woodland Park Zoo (USA) – Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo – 1996

I used to see a solitary Matschie's Tree Kangaroo at Woodland Park Zoo (USA) on a consistent basis, back when there was an exhibit for the species inside the Day Exhibit of the building that caught on fire and permanently closed down in 2016. The zoo is bringing back Tree Kangaroos in a brand-new habitat in 2026.

You can see a Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo resting on a ledge in this exhibit at San Diego Zoo (USA). I miss seeing this species at that zoo, as the last ZooChat photo is 2013 and in the Outback area the zoo has not had any Tree Kangaroos for a long time now.

.
Fortunately, the Tree Kangaroo at Minnesota has moved into the old Red Panda/Urial Exhibit on the Tropics Trail. That exhibit is much better suited for Tree Kangaroos, and it offers many more climbing opportunities and elevation than their old exhibit.
Unfortunately, the zoos Tree Kangaroo has been having health complications for a while and has been off exhibit for the past few months.

Tree kangaroos are another favorite of mine, and a species I'd love to see more zoos get into! I've been spoiled for years being able to see Matschie's tree kangaroos many times at Roger Williams Park Zoo, including multiple joeys over the years. Tree kangaroos also have a lot of great conservation tie-ins. Woodland Park Zoo has run the TK-CP (Tree Kangaroo Conservation Project) for years, along with support from Roger Williams and a number of other zoos, so it's a really great species to see in zoos for these reasons (as well as them being both super cute and super weird!)

Neither Riverbanks nor San Antonio have tree kangaroos anymore either. Have any new zoos picked them up in recent years? They're a big fave of mine, so it's a real shame seeing so many zoos going out of them.
Even though some zoos have gone out of the species, at least three zoos now have the ability to house more than one breeding pair of tree kangaroos, which is really beneficial to creating a sustainable population. Namely, there are three or more adult tree kangaroos at the following zoos: Zoo Miami, Roger Williams Park Zoo, and Woodland Park Zoo.

There have been at least two new holders in recent years too: Denver Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

It's fascinating to see the recent history of Tree Kangaroos in American zoos, as many establishments have gone out of the species (ABQ BioPark, Franklin Park, Miami, Miller Park, Milwaukee County, Omaha, Oregon, Riverbanks, San Diego, Sedgwick County, etc.) and that has been alarming. But, as @Neil chace pointed out, at least there's been some new holders and a trio of zoos with multiple adult 'roos'. I think that the entire U.S. population is now "Matschie's" and there are no "Goodfellow's" left in the country.

I saw the Matschie's Tree Kangaroo exhibit at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) last summer and it's a lush, nicely designed complex that ties in nicely with the whole Walkabout Australia zone. However, one flaw is that yet again there's a collection of dead branches that totals maybe 8 feet in height. Zoos are really reluctant to allow their Tree Kangaroos to have a high canopy area to climb in. I did not include the SDZSP exhibit on my list as when I was there I didn't actually see a Tree Kangaroo, just a big outdoor habitat.

Where in the zoo was this? I've visited several collections with tree kangaroos, but only ever actually saw them at Milwaukee's old Australia house. Incredibly endearing animals that I've just had bad luck with.

As thrilled as I am about Brookfield's recently announced "Southwest Australian Provinces" exhibit, I can't help but be just a little bummed tree kangaroo were cut from the project after being announced previously.

If the theme is southwest Australia then tree-kangaroos don't fit that theme.

Of course, Matshie's Tree-Kangaroo doesn't fit an Australia theme at all, since they are endemic to Papua New Guinea, but while other tree-kangaroo species do occur in Australia, none occur in southwest Australia.

The exhibit is also supposed to have some sort of Bird of Paradise, Koalas, and Tasmanian Devils, so it doesn't appear they'll be strictly sticking to Southwest Australian theme anyways.

I've seen Giant Anteaters at 57 zoos. An interesting fact with this species is that, going down my list of zoos, I would estimate that at least 50% of them had Giant Anteaters in a mixed-species habitat. There's a wide range of hoofed animals, primates and even birds that have all been combined with Giant Anteaters, which perhaps showcases how easy going this species is in captivity. I've seen keepers in with Giant Anteaters as well, even though these animals are famous for their large front claws. They are nice species to see in zoos, although occasionally I've come across one pacing badly and that's been unfortunate to witness.

How to choose the maximum 20 photos for this post? Let's go...

Quite often, when I think of Giant Anteaters in captivity, I recall watching one sink into a small pool of water at San Diego Zoo (USA). I watched this specific animal for a long time and I always wonder if Giant Anteaters would benefit from having large water sources in their exhibits. At zoos with big pools, do the Giant Anteaters ever submerge and utilize that space? Has anyone seen one swimming?

At Denver Zoo (USA), I saw a Giant Anteater in with Spider Monkeys. At Brookfield Zoo (USA), I saw a Giant Anteater pacing on mock-rock while in a mixed-species bird/primate exhibit inside Tropic World. It seems that Giant Anteaters are easily combined with other creatures in zoos.

I enjoyed seeing a Giant Anteater explore its large, grassy yard at Detroit Zoo (USA) in 2008:

This is a poor quality photo, but it's one that is historically important for this conversation as it shows a Giant Anteater and a Black Curassow, in an exhibit that also held Golden Lion Tamarins and some other birds, at Cincinnati Zoo (USA) in 2008. It's possible that this indoor enclosure temporarily held a Giant Panda back in the day, and at one point it apparently had Komodo Dragons as well.

Here is the Giant Anteater/Maned Wolf yard at Phoenix Zoo (USA) in 2011, when the animals were mixed together in the same enclosure.

Jacksonville Zoo (USA) has had Giant Anteaters in with Capybaras, White-faced Sakis, Black Howler Monkeys and Squirrel Monkeys over the years. Not all at the same time, but various combinations have existed in the last 16 years.

Giant Anteaters and Capybaras were together at Buffalo Zoo (USA) when I was there in 2010. The exhibit was entirely indoors inside Rainforest Falls.

Birmingham Zoo (USA) had a nice yard for Giant Anteaters that same summer:

There is the ruined temple vibe for this Giant Anteater, paired with Two-toed Sloths and Agoutis, at Audubon Zoo (USA) in 2010.

Giant Anteaters were together in the same space as Maned Wolves at Houston Zoo (USA) for years. Now, of course, the zoo has opened its impressive new Pantanal zone that includes Giant Anteaters. Here's an image of the old Anteater/Wolf enclosure:

Sacramento Zoo (USA) has recently maintained Giant Anteaters in a small, old-fashioned big cat grotto. Fresno Chaffee Zoo (USA) has kept Giant Anteaters and Capybaras together in this old great ape enclosure (photo from 2011):

Palm Beach Zoo (USA), in 2012, had a Pioneer House that was also partially used for viewing an enclosure that contained Giant Anteaters, Baird's Tapirs, Capybaras, Maras, Southern Screamers, Black Swans and various other waterfowl.

Amongst zoo nerds, the Anteater House at Dortmund Zoo (Germany) is legendary. Is there another zoo in either Europe or North America that has an actual 'Anteater House'? When there in 2019, the species list consisted of the following: Giant Anteater, Southern Tamandua, Kinkajou, Two-toed Sloth and Six-banded Armadillo.

Ree Park Safari (Denmark) had a spacious outdoor paddock for Giant Anteaters and a somewhat tiny little holding building as well. I suspect that there's a larger housing unit elsewhere.

A terrific South American Pampas awaits visitors at Aalborg Zoo (Denmark). Indoors, immersed in deep mulch even on the visitor side (!!) are Lowland Tapirs, Giant Anteaters, Spider Monkeys, Six-banded Armadillos and free-ranging Two-toed Sloths. Outside are Giant Anteaters, Lowland Tapirs, Maras, Capybaras, Vicunas and Rheas.

* On the top of page 60, I have my final lists for Carnivora (130 species) and Primates (141 species) = 271 species at the 551 different zoos/aquariums I've visited.

This exhibit was the old nursery building where the zoo would house newborns for viewing before they put them on exhibit, similar to what Nashville does now. It is still present, across the path from the Desert Dome and just between the Scott Aquarium and the elevator building. The zoo stopped allowing guests to this area of the zoo in the early 2010s I believe.

The tree kangaroos were always a traveling exhibit brought to the zoo in the past, they did have a much better exhibit inside of the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Pavilion that was in the place of the now video screen/seating area that did show live video of inside the Elephant House when the calves were first born. I will see if there is a photo of the old tree kangaroo exhibit in the gallery, but there might not be.

The house in Dortmund was always the xenarthra-house, not the anteater-house. Back when I visited, giant anteaters in Europe were rarer than anteater-teeth and Dortmund was the only zoo that kept them going. It was the first time I saw one and I’ve been happy to see one ever since.

When I visited, the house had 3 species of armadillo, next to the tamandua, sloth and giant anteaters.

Shame they lost two of them and I don’t know how a kinkajou snuck in…
