Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

Well, @NNM. I really like San Diego Zoo's exhibit for Common Hippos, primarily because the underwater viewing windows are enormous and there's lots of space for big crowds. If a hippo approaches a window, then it's a thrilling sight and hippo enclosures that lack underwater viewing cannot capture those moments. I also love the European mixed-species exhibits with hippos, such as the Nyala in with them at Berlin Zoo and the Nile Lechwe at Safari Park Beekse Bergen. I can't remember if the Sitatunga at ZOOM share the same space with the hippos, but that exhibit there is amazing either way. Common Hippos are very easy to maintain in captivity, they lead long lives and they famously breed like crazy.

Another fantastic Common Hippo exhibit which I didn't highlight before is the one at Chiang Mai Zoo (Thailand), which had at least 3 hippos and was delightful. There's a river-like waterway from the holding building to the main pool, as well as a gorgeous jungle backdrop. Here it is:

As for the Pygmy Hippo exhibit at Franklin Park Zoo (USA), it actually seems fine to me and there's a lot of mock-rock in the background and it appears to not have changed much from when I visited the zoo in 2012. However, scanning my list of 44 zoos where I've seen Pygmy Hippos, there's perhaps only 5 of them (Lincoln Park, Brookfield, Toronto, Omaha, Franklin Park) where I saw the species entirely indoors. After seeing so many Southeast Asian zoos with Pygmy Hippos outdoors in the sunshine, with wild monitor lizards and tropical birds mingling in their exhibits, it seems antiquated to keep such a large mammal indoors with zero outside access. Franklin Park's exhibit seems fine and it's probably nice and cozy for the hippos, but these days it's very much an anomaly in keeping Pygmy Hippos indoors. I don't have a huge problem with the practice, but the fact remains that very few zoos do that these days. Around 90% of the zoos I've seen have given Pygmy Hippos an outdoor exhibit.

I'll end off my hippo analysis with a final list combining both species. Check out the bottom section, where a ton of Southeast Asian zoos have both Common and Pygmy Hippos, often in multiple exhibits. There's a lot of African fauna in Asian zoos.

I have visited 92 zoos with some type of hippo (17 zoos with both species)

Common Hippo – 65 zoos
Pygmy Hippo – 44 zoos

Some of these zoos are ones I’ve visited on many occasions, but I’ve listed them only once and that is based on the first time I ever saw hippos at each zoo.

I just realized you missed out Common Hippos in Batu Secret Zoo. Seems you didn't ride the train attraction, because the train attraction takes you to several exclusive exhibits that can not be seen through walking. Several of those species include Saltwater crocodiles, Indian Rhino, North American Elks, White Rhino, and of course, Nile Hippos, where you can feed them Taman Safari style. Meaning you would've at least saw 18 zoos with both species of Hippos had you ride on them (that also basically means every single Indonesia zoo that has a hippo except Lembang has BOTH species in their exhibit)

In Mexico only Guadalajara and Leon zoos have muntjac. The mexican zoos favor keeping the native brocket deer instead, which makes sense. Collared peccaries are very common in our Zoos and white lipped peccaries are present in various animal collections. Wild boar sometimes appears. Common hippos are everywhere.

I'm going to look at TWO species today.

Called Axis Deer at the majority of zoos I've been to, but also now more commonly referred to as Chital, is a species I've seen at 40 zoos. There might even be more on my list, depending how accurate my memory is of seeing hundreds of them at Southeast Asian zoos. (If there's anything I need to edit then send me a message) Some of the zoos that @twilighter and I visited last month must surely breed enormous numbers of Chital as food for carnivores, as we saw some herds that had 100+ deer at a single facility.

2015 = 8 zoos
2024 = 17 zoos

AND...

I've seen Bawean Deer at 8 zoos. A solitary, rather obscure German collection (;)) and then a lot of Bawean Deer in Southeast Asia last month.

1- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Bawean Deer – 2019
2- Taiping Zoo (Malaysia) – Bawean Deer – 2024
3- Zoo Melaka (Malaysia) – Bawean Deer – 2024

When one considers the range of exotic species that used to be prevalent in Australian zoos, it's a little bit sad as these days that number has been decimated. When I toured Adelaide Zoo (Australia) in 2007, there was a paddock for Axis Deer. What does it hold now?

@Baldur

Wild Asia is the name of the monorail ride that whisks visitors past a range of Asian hoofstock species at the Bronx Zoo (USA), including Axis Deer and Barasingha that can be seen in this photo:

@Baldur

Buffalo Zoo (USA) had a small herd of Axis Deer when I visited in 2010 and in later years the deer were mixed with Indian Rhino.

Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari (USA) has a large herd of Axis Deer and the zoo has maintained the species for many years. The zoo looks rather parched in the stifling heat of an Arizona summer.

I saw 8 zoos with Axis Deer in the summer of 2015, with 6 out of those 8 places being junky American zoos and only Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center being what I would call 'reputable' destinations. Then I was off on my huge 2019 trek through Western Europe and at Dierenrijk (Animal Kingdom) (Netherlands), now called Eindhoven Zoo, I saw Axis Deer, Red Deer, Asian Elephants and Crab-eating Macaques all together!

@KevinB

In Germany, I saw Axis Deer at the famous Krefeld Zoo, the hugely popular family destination known as Serengeti-Park, Tierpark Petermoor and Tierpark Strohen (Germany):

I then saw hundreds upon hundreds of Axis Deer in Southeast Asia. A nasty little place called Lopburi Zoo (Thailand) had Axis Deer in an exhibit next to some residential houses:

Lanna Mini Zoo (Thailand) had a small paddock for Axis Deer that was a bit muddy in sections:

Chiang Mai Zoo (Thailand) has an 'Asian Hoofstock Exhibit' and then a second spacious area that contains Banteng and multiple deer species, including Axis Deer. The zoo has very large herds of deer between these two zones.

At Zoo Melaka (Malaysia), the place was teeming with Axis Deer:

As for Bawean Deer, I remember getting excited to see the species at Berlin Tierpark (Germany) in 2019, as I knew that I'd never come across this particular animal before. The classic Tierpark green fencing is evident in this photo.

@Hvedekorn

Thinking that I might never see Bawean Deer again, I was surprised to then see the species at least 7 times just on one trip! When I was taken on a guided tour of Taiping Zoo (Malaysia), with @twilighter and @Toki and one of the curators, we paused and had a good look at the deer in their enclosure. If my memory serves me correctly, there's currently a herd of 23 at that zoo.

Zoo Melaka (Malaysia) probably has approximately that same total, so to see around 45 Bawean Deer at a couple of Southeast Asian zoos was a real treat and the exhibit there is gorgeous. We saw wild Dusky Langurs nearby, heard wild gibbons hooting in the jungle, and admired one of the better exhibits at a zoo that has seen better days.

I then saw Bawean Deer on another 5 occasions, all in Indonesia where the species is quite common. I've not yet uploaded my photos from my 10 days travelling to zoos all over Bali and Java, but here's a few images from others.

Order Artiodactyla:

Antilocapridae: 1 species (30 zoos with Pronghorn)

Camelidae: 2 species (27 zoos with Guanaco, 18 Vicuna)

Cervidae: 5 species so far - (78 zoos with Reeves's Muntjac, 40 Axis Deer, 21 Southern Red Muntjac, 8 Bawean Deer, 4 Northern Red Muntjac)

Delphinidae: 7 species (15 zoos with Common Bottlenose Dolphin, 3 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin, 3 Killer Whale, 3 Pacific White-sided Dolphin, 1 Commerson's Dolphin, 1 False Killer Whale, 1 Short-finned Pilot Whale)

Giraffidae: 5 species (175 zoos with Giraffe (4 species), 31 Okapi)

Hippopotamidae: 2 species (65 zoos with Common Hippo, 44 Pygmy Hippo)

Iniidae: 1 species (1 zoo with Amazon River Dolphin)

Monodontidae: 1 species (7 zoos with Beluga Whale)

Phocoenidae: 1 species (3 zoos with Harbour Porpoise)

Suidae: 8 species (65 zoos with Red River Hog, 51 Warthog, 24 Babirusa, 17 Visayan Warty Pig, 17 Wild Boar, 6 Bearded Pig, 3 Javan Warty Pig, 1 Bushpig)

Tayassuidae: 3 species (33 zoos with Collared Peccary, 17 Chacoan, 4 White-lipped)

Tragulidae: 4 species (13 zoos with Lesser Indo-Malayan Chevrotain, 9 Javan, 7 Greater Indo-Malayan, 2 Balabac)

Now that I'm done with all the 8 'pig' species I've seen in zoos, it's time to plunge into the family of Cervidae. I'll begin by lamenting the lack of diversity with muntjacs, as the book All the Mammals of the World (2023) lists 13 species and yet how many are easily seen in zoos anywhere on the planet? An individual can visit hundreds and hundreds of zoos and yet not see most of the types of muntjac that exist. It's actually remarkable how few different species pop up in zoos all across the continents.

There's also a question of accuracy with zoo signage, as a huge chunk of the muntjacs I've seen have been Reeves's Muntjacs, even though at times the signage in the past has said something like 'Asian Muntjac', 'Indian Muntjac', 'Chinese Muntjac' or various other names for species that are clearly Reeves's. While @twilighter and I were in Southeast Asia, we saw Southern Red Muntjacs everywhere, often labeled as 'Indian Muntjacs', and some Northern Red Muntjacs. (On a return trip to Khao Kheow Zoo while I was flying back to Canada, @twilighter also saw a Fea's Muntjac) There were some Northern Red Muntjacs in Southeast Asia at the zoos we visited, based on information from curators working there, as well as the odd Southern Red Muntjac and Northern Red Muntjac in American zoos in the past. Some zoos in Asia don't know if they have Southern or Northern Red Muntjacs as sometimes the signage is inaccurate. It's all a bit vague and I've done the best I can to compile my master list. One thing for sure is that muntjacs are common in captivity, as I surpassed a century of zoos with muntjacs last month.

101 zoos and 3 species (78 Reeves’s, 21 Southern Red, 4 Northern Red - and likely many more) + 2 zoos had 2 species at once

I might have even seen some Roosevelts' Muntjacs, with that name appearing on a few signs here and there, but perhaps the zoos back in the day didn't even know what species they had in their enclosures and I have no definitive way of knowing that I saw Roosevelts'. Some of those zoos likely meant Reeves's and got the name wrong...haha! Perhaps some zoo nerds reading this can privately message me and I can edit if necessary. Let me know what I saw. ;)

These 5 trips had a lot of muntjac sightings:

There's been a LOT of mixed-species exhibits involving muntjacs and I'll go with that theme for today's post.

Mesker Park Zoo (USA) had Reeves's Muntjacs, Axis Deer and Przewalski's Horses all together in this spacious paddock in 2010. You can see a small fenced off area that allowed the muntjacs access but not the larger mammals.

Some establishments, such as Rosamond Gifford Zoo (USA), had signs saying 'Chinese Muntjacs' on their exhibits. I'm just assuming the animals were Reeves's Muntjacs, but who knows?

Oh boy. Here's two 'Muntjacs' at Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) in 2014. Apparently this exhibit no longer exists, but there were three animals in this tiny cage and I wasn't impressed. Another photo of mine in the gallery reveals a dad, mom and baby muntjac.

In American zoos, Reeves's Muntjacs are often 'stop-gap' animals to fill an exhibit when the regular species dies. There's no way that this cage was designed for muntjacs at Peoria Zoo (USA) and I'm sure the enclosure holds a different species a decade after my visit.

Didn't you see Fea's Muntjac at Khao Kheow zoo?

@Emanuel Theodorus Yes, when visiting Batu Secret Zoo @twilighter and I spent so long on a guided tour with the head curator, which included the huge taxidermy museum and a traditional Indonesian lunch in the restaurant, that we simply ran out of time for the 20-minute safari ride area. So we didn't see any hippos at Batu, but of course we saw so many hippos elsewhere that it was okay. ;) The Batu day was tight for time, as the bird park known as Eco Green Park was also larger than expected and then we had a very long bus ride to catch afterwards.

@carlos55 It's interesting that muntjacs are very rare on some continents. Thanks again for the Mexican information!

@Zz123 We visited Khao Kheow Zoo (Thailand) early in the trip and there are no Fea's Muntjacs on-show there. At the very end of the 23 days, I flew back to Canada and @twilighter had a day by himself and he decided to go back to Khao Kheow Zoo for a second visit as it's a very impressive facility. (If KK Zoo was in America then it would be one of the top 10-15 zoos in the nation) While there, he arranged a behind-the-scenes tour where he saw 1 male and 2 female Fea's Muntjacs and we are unaware of any other zoo in the world with the species. Does anyone know of another facility with Fea's?

I have seen Tufted Deer, labeled in most cases as Western Tufted Deer, at 17 zoos. My sightings have been almost exclusively at zoos in the USA, and adding up all the zoos I've seen in Europe (120), Australia (20) and Asia (60), which totals 200 zoos, I've seen Western Tufted Deer only THREE times on those three continents. A true rarity for me outside of North America!

1- Woodland Park Zoo (USA) – Western Tufted Deer – 1996
2- Bronx Zoo (USA) – Western Tufted Deer – 2008
3- Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (USA) – Western Tufted Deer – 2008

Then I headed off to Europe and it really is remarkable that out of circa 200 zoos in Europe, Australia and Asia, I've only seen Tufted Deer on 3 occasions that I can remember. Did I miss any? It's Blijdorp, Berlin Tierpark and Osnabruck and that's it out of 200 non-North American zoos.

Apparently the European populations of Tufted Deer are all Michie's Tufted Deer (E. c. michianus) and not the 'Western' variety. Here's an image I like at Blijdorp Zoo (Netherlands). There's a Red Panda/Tufted Deer exhibit that is on both sides of the walkway, with the pandas obviously able to cross back and forth at will. My good friend John Tuson is the man in shorts and he's the author of two incredible zoo books on British/Irish zoos and German zoos.

All 3 of those zoos, Blijdorp, Berlin Tierpark and Osnabruck, renovated their Tufted Deer exhibits after my 2019 European zoo trip. That's actually an intriguing fact. Here's the new Osnabruck habitat:

Personally, Tufted Deer are always a pleasure to see, and I still reminisce about them at ZooTampa every time I pass by the current gharial habitat; and if you asked me if I prefer them over something like a Reeve’s Muntjac. I would certainly choose the former.

Also, on an unrelated note, did you ever see any Pygmy Hippos during your visit to Khao Kheow Zoo? Because, if so, then I wonder if you ever saw the now famous (0.1) Moo Deng when you were there.

When I first visited Tampa 10 years ago as a young kid, the tufted deer were mixed with gharial in the exhibit pictured above. Unaware gharial almost exclusively eat fish, young me was worried the deer somehow got into the wrong enclosure and would be eaten by the crocodilians. Thankfully, a keeper reassured me that all was well. :p

I love this exhibit, although in hindsight I probably wouldn't have included it on the 100 must-see exhibits thread I did last year, especially now that the stork is gone. You're able to get extremely close to the tufted deer and the landscaping is beautiful. Mammal aviaries in general are a concept I wish was more prevalent in the US. The new Sacramento Zoo will include the countries first okapi aviary, but otherwise I struggle to think of very many.

We saw a Pygmy Hippo (probably a male) on-show when we visited Khao Kheow Zoo (Thailand), but we did not see the now viral Moo Deng. Even when @twilighter returned to KK Zoo for a second visit, he did not see the baby Pygmy Hippo. He was probably too busy taking photos of Mainland Serow and Fea's Muntjac. :p

Indeed :) I also visited the World's leading Mainland Clouded Leopard breeding center at Khao Kheow. This facility has very impressive breeding record with 55 births, only between 2002 and 2015. They united efforts with Nashvile and Smitsonian in Clouded Leopard Consortium.

Moving on from Tufted Deer, today it's time for TWO deer species. Neither of them have ever been very common for me to come across, with in fact very few sightings until my Southeast Asian trip last month when I saw both species at least 5 times each in a variety of zoos. (If I missed a couple of zoos, please send me a message as there's so many vast, unsigned deer herds in the Asian safari parks that it's easy to omit a species. I am convinced they are bred for carnivores! ;))

I saw Fea's muntjac in the now closed Dusit Zoo (Bangkok) back in 2012. If my memory serves me well, I saw just one.

The new red panda/tufted deer enclosure in Blijdorp is not a reinvention of the other red panda enclosure, but a seperate enclosure (formerly the takin rock). Blijdorp now has 2 red panda/tufted deer enclosure right next to each other (and yet another tufted deer enclosure elsewhere in the zoo)

Moving on from Barasingha and Eld's Deer, today it's time for TWO more deer species.

I'd seen Hog Deer at very few zoos, literally only 3 times in my life prior to my 2019 European trip when I saw the species 4 times. Then, just last month, I saw Hog Deer at 13 zoos in 3 weeks in Southeast Asia!

I've seen Hog Deer at 20 zoos and most of them were in Asia:

1- Bronx Zoo (USA) – Indian Hog Deer – 2008
2- Oklahoma City Zoo (USA) – Hog Deer – 2008

I've seen Calamian Deer at 3 zoos. All 3 are facilities I've visited more than once, with 8 trips to San Diego, 3 to Phoenix and 2 to Los Angeles, but the first time I recorded seeing Calamian Deer was all in 2008. Does anyone know the status of this species in North American zoos? Are we down to just a few individuals at this point? My guess is that the situation is a little bleak.

1- Phoenix Zoo (USA) – Calamian Deer – 2008
2- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Calamian Deer – 2008
3- Los Angeles Zoo (USA) – Calamian Deer – 2008

It's interesting to learn there are no Calamian deer in zoos anywhere in their native country. Seems like it's indeed down to just a few males in the USA.

Indeed, only very few Calamian Deer males left in USA from a herd of about 60 at San Diego in the early 2000's. LA and Phoenix zoo joined the program too late and this endangered species will be lost soon... The WAZA news 4/2013 are talking about "Not Sexy Enough to Survive" Calamian Deer and it's unfortunate destiny in captivity: Waza news 4 2013

I saw two in LA in 2020, and I remember that Phoenix had at least one, but I am not sure how many left.

After two species yesterday (Hog Deer and Calamian Deer), here's THREE more deer species in this post.

I've seen Common Fallow Deer at 63 zoos and Persian Fallow Deer at 1 zoo (at least) and Red Brocket Deer at 3 zoos.

Fallow Deer are of course one of the most common deer species in zoos, found seemingly everywhere. Of note, is that I saw a big herd of 20+ Persian Fallow Deer at Opel Zoo (Germany) and that is an entirely different species in comparison to the Common Fallow Deer. I also saw 'Fallow Deer' at both Berlin Zoo (Germany) and Berlin Tierpark (Germany) in August 2019, but I did not note if those two collections held Persian Fallow Deer and/or Common Fallow Deer. Maybe someone would know if the Persian species was there at that time as I would have definitely seen the animals.

Fallow Deer don't often require much in the way of shelter, as they are surprisingly hardy mammals. Here's an example of a covered area at Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Zoo (USA):

I saw a LOT of Fallow Deer on my 2015 road trip through the hot, dry, dusty zoos of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Keepers of the Wild (USA) had an 11-acre enclosure with Fallow Deer, Mule Deer and...Ostriches!

Scandinavian Wildlife Park (Denmark) has an enormous exhibit for Fallow Deer and I counted circa 75 deer there in 2022. It was possible to buy bags of food for the deer and to even pet them as they are incredibly tame.

@MagpieGoose

The first time I ever saw Red Brocket Deer was at Phoenix Zoo (USA) in 2008. There was a Wetlands Habitat with Red Brocket Deer, Chilean Flamingos, Coscoroba Swans, American White Pelicans and Sandhill Cranes and it was arguably one of the highlights of the zoo. When I was at Phoenix Zoo last year, the whole area had been transformed into an exhibit for American Alligators, but I think that the zoo had only the ONE gator at that time. A waste. At least Phoenix Zoo still has Red Brocket Deer, next to the Calamian Deer in the Children's Zoo area.

I double checked zootierliste and as I suspected the brockets at Emperor Valley Zoo (Trinidad & Tobago) are Trinidad red brocket (Mazama americana trinitatis), while the ones in American Zoos lately have been Central American red brocket (Mazama temama)
