Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

My next choice of species is Gerenuk, an almost mythical beast in European zoos. It's amazing to think that arguably the best continent in the world for zoos has rarely ever showcased this extraordinary species. I've been extremely fortunate with Gerenuk, as I saw these mammals at 8 zoos in a single summer in 2008 (!!) and in the U.S. there's always been a few zoos here and there with these long-necked antelopes. They are currently quite rare worldwide, with the two Berlins and then a handful in America and that's it according to Zootierliste. A lot of the AZA zoos I've seen Gerenuk at have now phased out the species and I've come across very few Gerenuk in the last decade. Thank goodness for the two Berlins and the two San Diegos!

I've seen Gerenuk at 19 zoos:

2008 = 8 zoos

1- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2006
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Gerenuk – 2006
3- Denver Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2006
4- Oregon Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2007
5- Memphis Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
6- Fort Worth Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
7- Oklahoma City Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
8- Phoenix Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
9- Los Angeles Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
10- Disney’s Animal Kingdom (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
11- White Oak Conservation Center (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
12- Zoo Miami (USA) – Gerenuk – 2008
13- Saint Louis Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2010
14- Dallas Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2010
15- Cameron Park Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2010
16- Peoria Zoo (USA) – Gerenuk – 2014

18- Berlin Zoo (Germany) – Gerenuk – 2019
19- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Gerenuk – 2019

San Diego Zoo (USA) has done well with Gerenuk and the zoo still showcases the species in the remaining Horn & Hoof Mesa zone. That section of the zoo is a mythical beast all on its own! ;) Here are two Gerenuk eating:

While the Los Angeles Zoo does still have gerenuk, they are currently off-exhibit. The main gerenuk habitat has been inaccessible to visitors for the past year and a half during construction of the upcoming Cape vulture exhibit, which is woefully behind schedule. Gerenuk were also sometimes on exhibit in the nursery yard in the Children's Zoo, but that whole area was closed down over the summer with no reopening date announced.

As I am catching up on some of your older posts, I would like to mention that the Los Angeles Zoo no longer has lesser kudu. The last specimen passed away in July 2023. Unfortunately, the zoo does not seem to be replacing most of the elderly animals as they pass on and the species collection is diminishing.

I really didn't realy appreciated much the gernuks when I visited the SDZ. After seeing how mythical they are I started to appreciate them a lot more.
The feeling of seeing a male gernuks on two legs while eating is preaty extraordinary.

Guilty as charged. :D Although recent developments are truly awe-inspiring (especially the red panda + tufted deer habitat and savannah area), part of me also finds it a bit of a pity that the familiar layout of the Tierpark is changing.

No records of gerenuk in Brazil that I am aware of, but I am not ruling out the possibility the species was held in São Paulo.

Never seen one either.

I've missed out on gerenuk multiple times - they were no-shows when I visited Denver and Brookfield, and off exhibit on the day of my visit to Cameron Park. Of your list, I know that at least Fort Worth, Houston, OKC, and Disney no longer keep the species, and Dallas has them effectively BTS on their closed down monorail track. They're a species I really hope I'm able to add to my list before they dwindle down even further.

After looking at Gerenuk (19 zoos), it's time to analyze Blackbuck before I begin discussing a variety of mammals that will definitely perk the interest of zoo nerds everywhere. Stay tuned for a bunch of obscure gazelles!

It would seem that Blackbuck are common everywhere, with Zootierliste currently showing the species to be at 120 European zoos, 50 North American zoos, 20 Asian zoos and even a handful in 'ungulate extinction land' Australia. There's approximately 40 zoos just in Germany and France with Blackbuck. I have seen herds of Blackbuck on Texas farms and hunting ranches along the side of highways, especially in 2015 when I spent a week or so driving all around that state. Even with these huge numbers that I'm quoting, once again here is a species that is disappearing from AZA accredited zoos. There's maybe 9 zoos left in the USA that are AZA accredited and have Blackbuck, but everywhere else they are thriving. Bizarre.

A really interesting stat is that of the zoos I've seen Blackbuck at, a minimum of TWELVE zoos are ones where the species is seen via a mode of transportation. A drive-through zone in a private car, a tram tour, a bus ride, etc. Blackbuck often have huge expanses for exhibits because they can be found in acres of space in drive-through zoos.

I've seen Blackbuck at 45 zoos:

2015 = 8 zoos
2019 = 15 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Blackbuck – 1975
2- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Blackbuck – 1998

Yes, finally a species we have in decent numbers here! There are at least 8 public holders of Blackbuck (Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Werribee Open-range Zoo, Altina Wildlife Park, Darling Downs Zoo, Monarto Safari Park, the National Zoo and Aquarium, Hunter Valley Wildlife Park and Mansfield Zoo) as well as D'Aguilar Wildlife and possibly Central Coast Zoo, neither of which have opened to the public yet. This may seem like a low number of holders, but between them, these zoos hold approximately 350 individuals, with Taronga Western Plains Zoo alone having three seperate herds and Monarto having something like 90 of them! There are also some in private hands.

The reason that this species is sort of common in Australia is that there actually used to be an introduced population of Blackbuck in Western Australia! As they are really the only small antelope in reasonable numbers in Australia (though Nyala are on the increase), Blackbuck are often mixed in "African Savannahs" with species like giraffes, zebras, ostriches, eland etc., despite the geographical inaccuracy.

2015 = 8 zoos
2019 = 15 zoos

I first saw blackbuck at Zoo Santo Inácio (Portugal) in 2018.

Before the 2020s, they were only present in a few zoos, mostly medium-sized, so coming across them would be a nice surprise.

One of the holders, however, is Curitiba. The zoo acquired twenty-one blackbuck through an apprehension made near Sorocaba in 2015. The following years, they began breeding like rabbits and spread like wildfire across Southeastern Brazil. Now four of our largest zoos (BioParque do Rio (my local zoo), São Paulo, Animália Park and Itatiba hold the species in fairly high numbers.

They have become an annoyingly common species in our zoos. Every blackbuck arrival at a new zoo has become a mood killer, honestly. It is just a stand-in antelope which takes up valuable space other herbivores (especially African bovids) could use, but our zoos won't make an effort to take part in EEPs or SSPs and we are left with blackbuck as our only option. It is similar to what has happened to Italy in regards Nile lechwe, although it would be a pleasure to see Kobus megaceros become common here.

Egg-xactly! That is the main reason why we are not fond of blackbuck anymore. They are never in Asian mixed species habitats, but by themselves or in African Savannas!

My local zoo has both an African savanna and huge enclosures for both an Asian elephant and a herd of water buffalo. Guess where they are.

The exhibit adjacent to the Southern white rhinos in São Paulo, formerly home to an African elephant, was being renovated. We believed Adão and Eva would get more space, but who showed up instead? Antilope cervicapra...

Animália Park has an African Savanna and an Indian rhino exhibit. Of course they are a stand-in species for African gazelles.

We were expecting sitatunga to be the new antelope species in Itatiba, but two blackbuck were brought instead.

Here in MEXICO, Blackbuck are also very common and are often mixed with giraffes and ostrich. Eland are also quite common. Impala and Nyala are present in some animal collections . Nilgai were once very common but they are less now. Bongos , and Gerenuk are absent from Mexican zoos. Kudu are present but rare.

Blackbuck is a species that I was seriously worrying about if it will completely dissapear from Czech zoos a decade or two ago. Major zoos were phasing the species out - in coordination with UCSZ Antelope comission - in order to create space for other antelope species (mirroring similar process in AZA zoos, could be said).

However it found new foothold thanks to several newly opened private zoos. It was also taken in mercy into mixed exhibits with Indian/Asian theming by major zoos (rhino pen in Pilsen, onager pen in Ostrava). So I guess it´s future is secured here, on low but sustainable level.

Time for TWO species today.

An antelope that is incredibly rare in zoos, according to Zootierliste, is the Grant's Gazelle. There's only around a half-dozen zoos in the world with the species and, somewhat remarkably, Safari West (USA) is the ONLY zoo of the last 300+ that I've visited with Grant's Gazelles. There's apparently zero in Asia, zero in Europe, zero in South America, zero in Australia, and just a handful of institutions left with them in North America. Enjoy them while you can.

It's an even more dire situation for Soemmerring's Gazelles as Zootierliste has ZERO in any zoos under that name. But, do not fear, because if you search under 'Sudanese' Soemmerring's Gazelle then it is revealed that there are 5 zoos in the world, all in the USA, with the species. Yikes...enjoy them while you can ditto.

I've seen Grant's Gazelles at 11 zoos:

2008 = 5 zoos

While Busch Gardens Tampa may not be a current holder of the Soemmerring’s Gazelle any longer. I do know that they’ve had Grant’s Gazelles as recently as August 2020, with one such image being taken by yours truly:

IMG_0287.jpeg

However, in the years since I took this photo, I have not seen the species anywhere beyond Busch Gardens. So, at this point, it’s probably safe to assume that they were phased out of the collection sometime afterwards.

[Edit] I now realized that through Zootierliste, the Grant’s Gazelles that they’ve had are/were of the southern subspecies (N. g. granti).

2008 = 5 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Grant’s Gazelle – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Grant’s Gazelle – 2006
3- Woodland Park Zoo (USA) – Grant’s Gazelle – 2008
4- Lincoln Park Zoo - Illinois (USA) – Grant’s Gazelle – 2008

Didn't expect both species of gazelle to be that rare. And this goes also for a lot of species, I guess that happens when you are a spolied zoo nerd:p.

Two gazelles yesterday and TWO more today.

Before I mention today's two species, I want to point out that anyone who is a frequent visitor to the two big San Diego parks is incredibly lucky, as just about every single species I discuss on this thread has been at one of those zoos at one time or another. For those zoo nerds who don't live near San Diego or Berlin, or have never toured the 4 famous zoos in those cities, then there must be a ton of species in this year-long thread that you've never seen. I pity the zoo nerd who lives in a remote U.S. state, or a distant European nation, and has never been to San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Berlin Zoo or Berlin Tierpark. Please save up and make the trips to both those cities before more species are gone. For example, I saw more than 20 Giant Eland at SDZSP in 2017 and when I went back 6 years later there was literally zero left. Things can happen in the blink of an eye.

Those cities contain the holy grails of zoos when it comes to the variety of species being held and it's always a fun debate as to which of those two cities is the #1 zoo destination. But then there's Singapore with its FIVE zoos and that country/city-state takes things to a whole different level. Part of the quality there is that the zoos are all fairly young. Singapore Zoo (1973), Night Safari (1994), River Wonders (2014), Bird Paradise (2023) and Rainforest Wild (2025) don't have any issues with aging infrastructure, crumbling buildings or grossly inadequate exhibits and they are conveniently all right on top of each other in one area. Plus, Singapore is famous for its cleanliness and attention to detail, which is reflected in the zoos even though they are set in jungles. I'm preaching to the choir here, as a lot of you already know the greatness of Singapore, as there's a very long list of zoo nerds on this site that have been to San Diego, Berlin and Singapore already.

Moving on...

Dama Gazelles are much more common than many other gazelle species for me, as back in 2008 and 2010 I saw a ton of these gazelles in AZA zoos across America. It was pretty tricky for me to figure out my exact numbers when I compiled my list a year ago, as in the ZooChat gallery there are loads of photos with a variety of names. Dama Gazelle is what the book All the Mammals of the World (2023) has gone with, but other names include Addra Gazelle, Mhorr Gazelle and Nubian Red-necked Gazelle. Regardless of what they are called, I think we can all agree that these are beautiful animals with stark white colouring that really stands out against a grassy savanna backdrop. In their native range, they are usually found in dry, sandy deserts.

Slender-horned Gazelles are another gazelle rarity, in much the same way as the two species (Grant's and Soemmerring's) analyzed yesterday. I've seen very few of these guys and I even missed them at Planckendael Zoo (Belgium) in 2019 and at that time they were the only ones of their kind in Europe but perhaps they were off-show during my visit. The last one there died not that long ago and there's only around 10 zoos on the planet with Slender-horned Gazelles and they are almost all in the USA.

I've seen Dama Gazelles at 36 zoos:

2008 = 10 zoos
2010 = 9 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Dama Gazelle – 1975
2- Smithsonian’s National Zoo (USA) – Dama Gazelle – 2008
3- Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium (USA) – Dama Gazelle – 2008
4- Indianapolis Zoo (USA) – Dama Gazelle – 2008

8- Mountain View Conservation Centre (Canada) – Dama Gazelle – 2008

I've only seen Dama Gazelles at 5 European zoos (and zero in Asia), with the first being Blijdorp Zoo (Netherlands). The enclosure there is a curious one, as it's surrounded by a fence except for the visitor viewing area where there's simply a big pile of boulders separating the gazelles from the humans. It was intriguing to see a little kid climb up on the rocks, as it wouldn't take much for anyone just to clamber over and go in with the gazelles. At European zoos, barriers are sometimes a bit more relaxed as people are generally smarter there than they are in America with thousands of frivolous lawsuits.

Dama Gazelles have white heads, white legs and white flanks, but a phased-in brown coat as well. They are much different from other gazelles and lack a black stripe that can be common in some other antelope species.

When I visited Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park (USA) last year, the zoo had THREE exhibits for Dama Gazelles. As I've said before, it's a crappy zoo for primate and bird cages, but the ungulate enclosures are fantastic and plentiful.

In my opinion dama gazelle are the most beautiful gazelle species. Again, I've passed through the exhibit of the slender-horned gazelle with out a care in the world, not seeing hiw rare they are I should stop and admire the gazelle.

Dama Gazelle is what the book All the Mammals of the World (2023) has gone with, but other names include Addra Gazelle, Mhorr Gazelle and Nubian Red-fronted Gazelle.

2008 = 10 zoos
2010 = 9 zoos

I went to Zoo Santo Inácio in 2018 expecting to see a Dama gazelle. They were not on-show at the time, so I was slightly frustrated.

No records of either species in Brazil. None in South America that I am aware of either.

I think that the Dama Gazelle at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) are currently found where there used to be 20+ Giant Eland.
This was the case for maybe two years after the giant eland left? When the giant eland first left, the Park moved subsets of their addax and addra gazelle herds into the former giant eland exhibit, but within the last year, both of these subsets have been shipped out (the Park still breeds both species behind-the-scenes), and the Park's breeding herds of greater kudu and Soemmerring's gazelles were moved in in their place. There is an addra gazelle calf being hand-raised in the lowland nyala exhibit at the Africa Tram Loading Station, so, for now, this species is still on display at the Park.

At around the same time the giant eland left, the bontebok in the exhibit next door also left. The bontebok were subsequently replaced with the Park's breeding herd of slender-horned gazelles, which are still there to this day.

Dama Gazelle is what the book All the Mammals of the World (2023) has gone with, but other names include Addra Gazelle, Mhorr Gazelle and Nubian Red-fronted Gazelle.

You may have overlooked a species! Nubian red-necked gazelle Nanger dama ruficollis is not Nubian red-fronted gazelle Eudorcas rufifrons laevipes. Latter is more closely related to Thompson's Gazelle.

Mhorr are another extremely threatened species. Worlds zoos agreed to concentrate on two different forms. In the USA there should be all eastern, white-bodied form Nanger dama ruficollis and in Europe the western, red-bodied form Nanger dama mhorr. However, real subspecies of Mhorr gazelle may be quite different from their zoo designation.
