Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

From Lechwe to Waterbuck to TWO species in today's post.

When I was a kid, my favourite antelope was the Sable Antelope as I had some marvellous examples in my toy animal collection. As an adult, I've essentially gone with the flow and switched over to Bongo, but Sable Antelope are almost as large and have really impressive horns and the darker coat of the males is eye-catching. This mammal species has been in the mid-range of popularity for me, having seen the species all over the USA, Europe, a few zoos specifically in Scandinavia and even Southeast Asia, but never in big numbers anywhere. These days, there's only around 10 AZA zoos with Sable Antelope and those numbers are down big time as I saw the species at approximately that total just on two trips in 2008 and 2010.

Mountain Reedbuck, as listed in the publication All the Mammals of the World (2023), also called Southern Mountain Reedbuck, are apparently only found at Berlin Tierpark (Germany), Dvur Kralove (Czech. Rep.) and Johannesburg Zoo (South Africa) if Zootierliste is to be believed. They aren't difficult to spot in Berlin as the zoo has several of them in one of those famous paddocks with the green fencing and Dvur Kralove seems like an incredible zoo to visit for its rarities and astonishing African collection. I definitely need to get to the Czech. Rep. one day!

I've seen Sable Antelope at 32 zoos:

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Sable Antelope – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2006
3- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2006
4- Lincoln Park Zoo - Illinois (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
5- Toronto Zoo (Canada) – Sable Antelope – 2008
6- Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
7- Oklahoma City Zoo (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
8- Disney’s Animal Kingdom (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
9- Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
10- Zoo Miami (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2008
11- Baton Rouge Zoo (USA) – Sable Antelope – 2010

22- ZOOM Erlebniswelt (Germany) – Sable Antelope – 2019
23- Beekse Bergen (Netherlands) – Sable Antelope – 2019
24- Berlin Zoo (Germany) – Sable Antelope – 2019
25- Serengeti-Park (Germany) – Sable Antelope – 2019
26- Givskud Zoo (Denmark) – Sable Antelope – 2022
27- Odense Zoo (Denmark) – Sable Antelope – 2022
28- Kolmarden Wildlife Park (Sweden) – Sable Antelope – 2022
29- Copenhagen Zoo (Denmark) – Sable Antelope – 2022
30- Zoo Negara (Malaysia) – Sable Antelope – 2024
31- Taman Safari II Prigen (Indonesia) – Sable Antelope – 2024
32- Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia) – Sable Antelope – 2024

AND...

I've seen Mountain Reedbuck at 1 zoo:

1- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Mountain Reedbuck – 2019

A fully-grown male Sable Antelope is a stunning sight. Here's an example at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA):

@TheoV

Toronto Zoo (Canada) had Sable Antelope during my only visit in 2008, but that species is gone now just as it's disappeared from many AZA zoos.

full

@arcticwolf

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (USA) has had Sable Antelope for as long as I can remember and when the zoo opened its $73 million African Grasslands complex a brand-new exhibit was created for the species. This paddock is more than an acre in size and you can see the zoo's train going past in the background.

Back in the day, Oklahoma City Zoo (USA) had one of the best hoofstock collections in America, with many chain-link yards for species such as Sable Antelope. It's amazing how lush and grassy some of the enclosures were.

@Baldur

I like this image of the sunlight coming through the trees and a Sable Antelope standing in what appears to be a meadow setting. It's apparent from the distinctive moat edge at the front that this can only be Zoo Miami (USA). Perhaps the greatest soccer player of all time regularly sneaks in visits to this zoo with his wife and 3 sons!

@Pleistohorse

It doesn't get much more flat and boring than this Sable Antelope exhibit at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park (USA):

Jackson Zoo (USA), which is barely staying open and viable these days, had a really interesting African Savanna when I toured this zoo in 2012. Four of the hoofstock species in this paddock were all gems back then: Sable Antelope, Klipspringer, Dama Gazelle and Springbok.

A dry, arid environment at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (USA) is home to a significant herd of Sable Antelope.

@Kudu21

My photo from Safari Parc Monde Sauvage (Belgium) shows a Sable Antelope with Giraffes, which seems like a bit of a rare situation judging from my list of zoos with the species. You can see an Ostrich in the background, as well as the African Elephant exhibit (which is awful!)

Sable Antelope are also found at ZOOM Erlebniswelt (Germany) and the colour variation in this photo is neat to see.

@Joker1706

Serengeti-Park (Germany) in Hodenhagen has a vast hoofstock collection in their drive-through area, including a herd of Sable Antelope.

I saw 3 Danish zoos with Sable Antelope, including Givskud Zoo (Denmark) with its sprawling African Savanna. This paddock also had 6 White Rhinos, a dozen Black Wildebeest, 10 Gemsbok, and even signs up for Cape Buffalo. There's a second African Savanna elsewhere at this excellent zoo.

full

When @twilighter and I visited Zoo Negara (Malaysia), we were toured around for 5 hours by one of the curators. He told us that the Sable Antelope often just jump out of their African Savanna exhibit at night and can be found wandering near their exhibit by staff who arrive early in the morning. The antelope then simply leap back into their paddock, as the barrier is extremely low. Apparently this has been going on for a long time and the zoo never has any problems with the animals going far into the zoo's grounds and they don't leave their enclosure during the day with visitors around.

full

At Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia), their African Savanna was unique to me. There's no chance of the Sable Antelope leaping out of their exhibit here, as everything is glass-fronted and there's walls at the back.

As for Southern Mountain Reedbuck, I have seen this species only once and it was in 2019 at Berlin Tierpark (Germany).

Hadn't realised you hadn't got to Czechia yet, you are going to love it when you do.

Can I also just say how much I have been enjoying this thread? The perfect amount of FOMO and "Perfect, I've seen that too".

As for Southern Mountain Reedbuck, I have seen this species only once and it was in 2019 at Berlin Tierpark (Germany).
One of my favourite exhibits at the Tierpark, because it's so utterly inconspicuous - though it's clearly fenced, it's easy to miss the Reedbuck themselves as they blend in superbly and if I'm getting my geography correct some very popular animals just nearby making it easy for the average zoo-goer to walk past without realising. Of course there's the biggest reason, which is that they're a true rarity, although if I were to rank Berlin on that it would be a difficult list to make given the number of them held.

Can I also just say how much I have been enjoying this thread? The perfect amount of FOMO and "Perfect, I've seen that too".
In complete agreement, and in some isolated cases the slight smugness of having certain animals easily visible locally...followed by the crushing jealously of having never seen certain others. And it's not just the posts themselves but the discussion after, it's a proper zoo-nerd discussion and it's thoroughly enjoyable to read and occasionally participate

At Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia), their African Savanna was unique to me. There's no chance of the Sable Antelope leaping out of their exhibit here, as everything is glass-fronted and there's walls at the back.

Was there any barrier (like schock wire) to prevent the animals from damaging the windows, or, more importantly, themselves? Because sable antelopes have been prone to crash into fences when startled and are best kept in spacious paddocks.

Thank you @Enzo for your continued contribution from a South American perspective and thank you to both @oflory and @cerperal for your kinds words about this thread. This is indeed a proper zoo nerd thread and I'm enjoying it as much as everyone else!

@Wessel799 There doesn't seem to be any hotwire along the windows, but by looking at my other photos from Batu Secret Zoo (Indonesia) I can see that there's extra plantings in front of some of the windows in the African Savanna and also a long black cable that runs across the area about a foot off the ground. It's quite well hidden, but probably effective.

Looking at Genus Hippotragus yesterday, I revealed that I had seen Sable Antelope at 32 zoos. One might assume that it would be a similar number for Roan Antelope but that is far from the case. This species feels as if it's edging towards extinction in North American collections, seemingly abandoned by most AZA establishments and even roadside 'Americana' facilities. I'd only seen Roan Antelope 9 times before I trekked across Western Europe in 2019 to boost my numbers a little, but this species is a rarity and I saw zero in Scandinavia or Asia on my last two Snowleopard Road Trips.

I've seen Roan Antelope at 14 zoos:

2019 = 5 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Roan Antelope – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Roan Antelope – 2006

Roan Antelope were combined with Nile Lechwe at BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo (USA) that same summer. The zoos in both Buffalo and Baton Rouge have big, ugly cement edges to their hoofstock yards and that concrete isn't aesthetically pleasing. Why not just let the hoofstock roam around the zoo at night like Zoo Negara (Malaysia) does with their Sable Antelope? Haha! :p

I saw roan antelope for the first time in 2018, at the Lisbon zoo. I reassure you, they have a huge collection of hoofstock, likely inherited from their colonial past.

I have not seen any elsewhere.

No records of Hippotragus equinus in Brazil or in the wider South American region either. Havana, however, mixes the species with many other African herbivores in its African savanna.

Time for TWO species today.

Addax are relatively common in many zoos all over the world, even though I didn't see any in 60 Southeast Asian zoos this past summer. In the past, I've seen loads of Addax at AZA zoos, quite a few in Europe, and they seem to be easy to maintain and breed in captivity. At times, I've even seen large herds of 15+ Addax in zoos.

Rhebok become the 9th Bovidae species (so far!) that I've seen in only one or two zoos, which illustrates the point that there's some incredibly rare hoofstock species out there in the world. Rhebok are so rare in captivity that Zootierliste currently has zero left in any facility and under the former holdings category there are only 5 zoos in 5 different countries listed: San Diego, London, Hannover, Warsaw and Dvur Kralove.

I've seen Addax at 36 zoos:

2010 = 7 zoos
2019 = 7 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Addax – 1975
2- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Addax – 1998

San Diego, London, Hannover, Warsaw and Dvur Kralove.
I've been meaning to add Joburg to that list :confused: They kept a small herd in the 80s.

Ribbok are a very interesting case which i've had the privilege to have seen wild just this last weekend, they can in fact be seen with relative ease in the South African Highlands and being a near endemic, they would make a lovely poster boy antelope for South Africa. Too bad they don't fare well in captivity.

I've spent a solid couple of months following this thread from time to time. It's seems like a terribly laborious thread but it really is interesting seeing how species switch about in zoos and kudos to you for taking the time. Any African trips on the calendar? :p

2010 = 7 zoos
2019 = 7 zoos

(Forgive me for the bad quality of the picture. It was my mom who took it, because back in the day, I used to hate photography as a whole.)

I also saw the species at the Lisbon zoo in 2018 (sorry for no pictures, mom grabbed her hard drive again where the pictures she took in Portugal are). I have not seen the species in a few years now, though I am aware of the existence of the species in Brazil, it is not very clear where, though. @Kenzo Reis Tatizawa showed us a picture of what seemed to be an addax at Animália Park. I am quite sure this individual came from Brasília, where they still had 2.0 at the time of @David Matos Mendes's visit

Scimitar-horned Oryx are one of the most common members of Bovidae that I've seen in zoos. They can be found in drive-through safari parks, mixed with other species, and are quite hardy when it comes to a range of temperatures as some northern-based zoos have done well with breeding the species. They do look better in a dry, arid environment and so it makes sense that I've seen this species in 6 zoos just in Texas and in plenty of other warm-weather locations. Looking at my list, there's definitely more warm-weather sites and that's a positive thing for this desert mammal.

I've seen Scimitar-horned Oryx at 43 zoos:

2015 = 8 zoos
2019 = 8 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Scimitar-horned Oryx – 1975

Pairi Daiza (Belgium) has a rather nice African Savanna exhibit built on a hillside and it's the type of exhibit that would be much lauded by zoo nerds if it was at a different facility. I feel that this particular area gets lost in the conversation about Pairi Daiza's exhibits due to the outlandish temples and volcanoes elsewhere. At various times, this enclosure has recently held species such as Scimitar-horned Oryx, African Elephant (now departed), Plains Zebra, Impala, Cape Buffalo and Blue Wildebeest.

I can't believe places mix them with Meerkats! Wouldn't the burrows be potentially dangerous to hoofstock like an oryx?

In the current oryx paddock at Artis (formerly for camels and other exotic domestics), a protective layer (a kind of mat I believe) is placed between surface and burrows/tunnels, which will prevent antelopes from stumbling.

Artis' new lion habitat is on the site of the former oryx exhibit.

The oryx paddock at Amersfoort has since then been replaced by an area for prairie dogs.

I saw scimitar-horned oryx at the Lisbon zoo in 2018.

The species has been held in a small number of Brazilian zoos.

The International Studbook for the species mentions two (1.1) were brought from Hannover to Londrina in 1976 (though they are "lost, to follow up"). I believe this was around the time São Paulo also got theirs.

As I previously mentioned, twelve Oryx dammah were imported from the United States to Pedro Avelino in 1983 because scientists believed antelope and Barbary sheep would outperform common livestock in the semiarid Caatinga. The experiment, however, proved to be a failure and by the time it ended, only three antelope (I believe two eland a female scimitar-horned oryx) were still alive. The oryx was sent to Dois Irmãos, the Recife zoobotanical park, where she passed away not so long after.

Pablo Escobar had at least two scimitar-horned oryx at Hacienda Nápoles in the 1970s

Well, they aren't classed as EW any more but even if they were Père David's deer certainly outnumber them by at least an order of magnitude if just on account of the size of herds
Have you seen the size of some of the oryx herds on safari parks and hunting ranches in the US? Well into the thousands of animals sometimes.

Quite correct but the number of Père David's deer in captivity (or invasive) is staggering. There's at least 6000 in a reserve in China, although that number is several years out of date now, at least a thousand in Europe, but the main populations are from hunting ranches in the US and an invasive population in Patagonia that numbers anywhere between several hundred and several thousand now.

I'm not entirely sure the concept of hunting ranches for extinct-in-the-wild animals sits quite right with me, but I suppose the cost involved to shoot one must be extortionate and at least marginally put towards conservation

I've never heard of the population in Patagonia? Do you have any places with more info? All I can see is some casual references on some hunting sites, and while it's unclear it sounds like they're just talking about hunting ranches.

Indeed, Père David's deer are invasive in Argentina. So are (or were) Himalayan tahr.

Algar Safari, which owns most the Argentinian stock, claims it has the third highest population of Père David's deer worldwide.

Many species of hoofstock have been introduced to the Southern Cone, usually through a few escapees from hunting ranches or because a breeding herd was deliberately released in the wild to encourage hunting. I am quite surprised Argentina has neither invasive Barbary sheep or nilgai.

Blackbuck are much of the same way. A neighbour of mine owns a herd of well over a hundred blackbuck, in addition to a herd of forty to fifty buffalo, multiple emus, and another enormous herd of fallow deer.

I think that once a species enters the private trade in large numbers, even an endangered species, it will eventually become ubiquitous in zoos, whether they be AZA or not.
