Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

Taronga Zoo (Australia) is the 'zoo with a view' and the Himalayan Tahr have a mock-rock 'blob' that is a historic element of the zoo. It would be interesting to note when this structure was built, because when I visited in 2007 it was certainly a memorable element of Taronga and the mini-mountain still exists today.

Although the exhibit does still exist today, and can be seen from the lion exhibit, it has been empty since 2016, and the path that the tahr used to viewed from is now only used by staff. The reason for this is that since your visit, a new tiger exhibit was opened on one side of Tahr Mountain, and a new lion exhibit was opened on the other. It was determined that the sight and smell of these large predators would cause the tahr unnecessary stress. They were sent to Hunter Valley Zoo, but what happened to them then is a mystery. The only current Australian holders of Himalayan Tahr are Altina Wildlife Park and Halls Gap Zoo, and they are all extremely inbred due to not having any new imports into the country for many decades. In New Zealand however, they are more common, as they are an invasive species there.

This is the best photo in the ZooChat gallery that shows the mini-mountain for Himalayan Tahr at Toronto Zoo (Canada). There was once a big herd here, but the numbers have steadily dwindled over the years.
The Toronto zoo is phasing out this species to build some new Sumatran Tiger exhibit according to their master plan. They are down to two of them as of Summer 2024.

Today I am going to look at FOUR species because it's time to tackle ibex. It was a bit tricky to figure out which species I've seen, but the ZooChat gallery and particularly Zootierliste have proven to both be enormously helpful in compiling this massively long thread. I've seen Alpine Ibex, Iberian Ibex, Nubian Ibex and Siberian Ibex.

Why don't North American zoos build big mountain exhibits for a variety of hoofstock species such as ibex? There's a lot of mock-rock 'blobs' that were often constructed in the WPA-era of the 1930s, but not many have stood the test of time in U.S. zoos and most have been demolished. Even the ones that were constructed in America pale in size and significance in comparison to the enormous zoo mountains in places like Paris, Budapest and Hamburg that often have a range of mammal and bird species all around them in satellite exhibits.

I have seen ibex at 28 zoos and that includes 4 species (13 Alpine, 9 Nubian, 5 Siberian, 1 Iberian):

2019 = 10 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Siberian Ibex – 1975
2- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Alpine Ibex – 1998
3- Langenberg Wildlife Park (Switzerland) – Alpine Ibex – 2003
4- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Iberian Ibex – 2006
5- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2006
6- Bronx Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2008
7- Fort Worth Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2008
8- Los Angeles Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2008
9- Baton Rouge Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2010
10- Dallas Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2010
11- San Antonio Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2010
12- Calgary Zoo (Canada) – Alpine Ibex – 2012
13- Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) – Alpine Ibex – 2014
14- Frank Buck Zoo (USA) – Nubian Ibex – 2015
15- Assiniboine Park Zoo (Canada) – Alpine Ibex – 2018
16- Artis Royal Zoo (Netherlands) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
17- Wildpark Gangelt (Germany) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
18- Wuppertal Zoo (Germany) – Siberian Ibex – 2019
19- Tiergehege Kaisergarten (Germany) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
20- Zoo Veldhoven (Netherlands) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
21- Dierenrijk (Animal Kingdom) (Netherlands) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
22- Berlin Zoo (Germany) – Siberian Ibex – 2019
23- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Siberian Ibex – 2019
24- Olderdissen Zoo (Germany) – Alpine Ibex – 2019
25- Nordhorn Zoo (Germany) – Siberian Ibex – 2019
26- Kolmarden Wildlife Park (Sweden) – Alpine Ibex – 2022
27- Kristiansand Zoo (Norway) – Alpine Ibex – 2022
28- Singapore Zoo (Singapore) – Nubian Ibex – 2024

For years, Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) had a herd of at least 15 Alpine Ibex and then one day (poof!) they were all gone and never to return.

Admittedly, I can get behind deer diversity being limited in North America due to CWD; but for caprines like the ibex above, what exactly is holding zoos back?!

Also, while I’m glad that the US and Canada have facilities like the Bronx Zoo that display such magnificent animals in equally impressive homes. I personally feel that’s not enough, and I really wish more zoos throughout the continent would do the same with brand-new exhibits.

Had I visited more Portuguese zoos (and wildparks), I would definitely choose one with more native fauna. Sadly enough, you can only see Alpine ibex in Portugal. I would have to go to Spain to see Capra pyrenaica.

Two Brazilian zoos have held ibex. São Paulo held a few Capra ibex in the 1970s, while Sapucaia do Sul had Capra sibirica in the 1960s. FZBRS obtained their wild goats because their entry to Argentina had been denied (they were originally heading to Rosario).

Tierpark Nordhorn (Germany) has a lot of domestic animals, but one of their truly great exhibits is for Siberian Ibex, Griffon Vultures and Waldrapp Ibis. This is actually a walk-in enclosure, meaning that visitors have their own area inside the exhibit. Fantastic.

@lintworm

If you zoom in and squint, you can see more than a dozen Alpine Ibex in this photo taken at Kolmarden Wildlife Park (Sweden). That species, and plenty more, are viewed via the 30-minute gondola ride.

There's a half-dozen fallen tree trunks that the Alpine Ibex can walk across at Kristiansand Zoo (Norway) in this spacious habitat that can also be seen via a trail that goes around to the peak.

Lastly, there is the phenomenal exhibit called The Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia at Singapore Zoo (Singapore). Nubian Ibex and probably 75+ Hamadryas Baboons exist in a habitat that can be seen via multiple vantage points. Absolutely brilliant and I even saw a wild Colugo in this part of the zoo, one of 4 wild Colugos that @twilighter and I saw in the space of a few hours.

Surprise, you didn't see the gelada+nubian Ibex mix at the SDZ, it was a mix I loved, tho it didn't last much. You've always mention the horn and hoorf mesa, but sadly I was to little to remember anything, and it's such a same:(. Luckly, I saw a iberian Ibex when I was at Spain in Madrid zoo, in enclosure that was formed by tiny islands in a lake and I remember an ibex swimming! @Maguari has a superb photo of the exhibit. Today the moat has been dried up and the space is much bigger.

After analyzing 4 ibex species yesterday, I'll stick to only one new mammal species today. This is an interesting one in terms of geography, as I've seen Markhor on relatively few occasions over the years. Canadian zoos pop up a few times, but in all my visits to 120 European zoos, I only ever saw Markhor twice even though they are currently found in at least 50 European zoos. I must have chosen the wrong nations to visit. ;) If I add up all my visits to European, Australian and Asian zoos in my lifetime, I've only ever seen Markhor FOUR times at those 200 zoos! Yet, there will perhaps be some zoo nerds reading this and thinking how they see Markhor everywhere they go. A quirky fact.

I've seen Markhor at 14 zoos (in 6 different nations):

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Markhor – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Markhor – 2006
3- Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (USA) – Markhor – 2008
4- Los Angeles Zoo (USA) – Markhor – 2008
5- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Markhor – 2009
6- Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park (USA) – Markhor – 2012
7- Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure (USA) – Markhor – 2012
8- Calgary Zoo (Canada) – Markhor – 2012

It's a big, famous American establishment, but for some reason Columbus Zoo (USA) doesn't seem to get a lot of attention by me on this thread. Here's what I saw during my tour of the zoo:

@Buckeye092

But due to issues with the Markhor getting out, the zoo erected some subtle wire fencing along the bottom of the enclosure and then turned the exhibit into what looks like an aviary from a distance. Are there actually any birds in there?

Calgary Zoo (USA) at least has a mini-mountain of rocks in its Markhor exhibit. This enclosure also held Alpine Ibex together with Markhor in the past, but I'm not sure if there's any ibex left now as the zoo was down to only a couple during my last visit.

I didn't see Markhor at Antwerp Zoo (Belgium) as they were added after my visit and I also didn't see Markhor at Pairi Daiza (Belgium) because apparently they are only visible via the train ride. I have never seen a markhor, though I would love to.

São Paulo imported a few markhor from Germany in 1960.

If I add up all my visits to European, Australian and Asian zoos in my lifetime, I've only ever seen Markhor FOUR times at those 200 zoos! Yet, there will perhaps be some zoo nerds reading this and thinking how they see Markhor everywhere they go. A quirky fact.

This ties in quite well to a remark I meant to make yesterday - despite how commonplace Capra taxa are within European collections, especially the alpine ibex, the genus is almost entirely absent from the UK  with the only representation being two collections holding Markhor.

People often deride stone zoo (just north of Boston, in Stoneham) for it's lackluster and often cramped exhibits, but I think the markhor and snow leopard exhibits are amongst the best in the zoo (in my opinion the second and third best exhibits in the whole zoo after the new wolf exhibit which is right next door). The markhor exhibit surpasses most of what is available at the superior sister zoo, the Franklin Park zoo in Boston. It takes advantage of (or at least gives the impression of doing so) the naturally hilly/rocky terrain in the area and provides a very natural-looking rocky outcropping for the markhor (and the neighboring snow leopards) to traverse.

I will analyze TWO species today.

I saw a lot of Mouflon while on a big European zoo trip in 2019 and these mammals look similar to Bighorn Sheep and are found in parts of Europe and Asia. Quite often, they have been signed as Armenian Mouflon in the zoos I've visited. All the Mammals of the World (2023) lists 6 subspecies each for Mouflon and Urial.

Urial are a rarity for me and in general this species doesn't seem to ever have had a strong foothold in zoos across the globe. Some of the animals look almost identical to Mouflon, while others have a variety of colour variation, and if someone went into a zoo and switched the signs then I'm not sure how many zoo nerds could instantly spot the difference between the species from afar.

I've seen Mouflon at 22 zoos:

2019 = 9 zoos

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Mouflon – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Mouflon – 2006
3- Toronto Zoo (Canada) – Mouflon – 2008
4- Chattanooga Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2010
5- Dakota Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2014
6- Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2014
7- DeYoung Family Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2014
8- Amarillo Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2015
9- Franklin Drive-Thru Safari (USA) – Mouflon – 2015
10- Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo (Canada) – Mouflon – 2018
11- Shalom Wildlife Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2018
12- Animal Haven Zoo (USA) – Mouflon – 2018

A typical 'wildpark' in Germany contains Mouflon and that is the case at Wildpark Dunnwald (Germany). Many of these zoos are open 24 hours a day and are free to enter.

As for Urial, here's a photo of 20 of them at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA). Between this place and Berlin Tierpark, is there a hoofstock species on my thread that never appeared at either zoo? Two remarkable facilities.

Mouflon are very common in South America, especially in the Southern Cone. They used to be way more common in Brazil back in the late 20th century (held in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Simba Safari and Passeio Público de Curitiba (the mouflon there were then sent to the newly inaugurated zoo, where was one killed by a pack of feral dogs)), but currently, they are down to a single holder (Goiânia), with another zoo having kept them recently (ZooPark da Montanha). @David Matos Mendes saw them there in 2018.

In 1914, the emperor of Austria-Hungary sent a shipment of over seventy different animals to the Vila Isabel zoo, the predecessor of BioParque do Rio. Amongst the ungulates were a pair of Afghan urials (referred to as "Kreishornschafe"). Other sheep mentioned include "Stummelschwanzschafe", "Heidelschafe" and "Viasitzerschafe", but I need some help from someone who speaks German to understand what those were.

I missed the urial at Paris with mere weeks. Still bugs me. Thanks for reminding me :p

I thought I might keep up with you (at least before your whole asia thingy), but erm.. no. Visiting the two San Diego’s multiple times over the last decades is just too much.

Still a good read this :)

Other sheep mentioned include "Stummelschwanzschafe", "Heidelschafe" and "Viasitzerschafe", but I need some help from someone who speaks German to understand what those were.

Stummelschwanzschaf - fat-tailed (domestic) sheep, widespread group of sheep from central Asia over middle east to Africa, but most probably identical with Somali sheep because this race was widely kept in zoos/tierparks around here already in late 19th century

Heide(l)schaf - moorland sheep, "Heidschnucke" is more modern catch-all term for several similar low-yield old races from lowlands south of Baltic sea (from Poland to Netherlands)

The last name is probably a corrupted word because it doesn´t ring a bell to me.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

When I began compiling my statistics for this thread more than a year ago, I would have guessed that Bighorn Sheep were very common and so it's a bit of a surprise that I haven't seen them in more zoos. Here is a mammal that I've seen in the wild a half-dozen times, because while driving through the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia to Alberta it's possible to come around a corner and see wild sheep grazing by the side of the highway.

Considering the enormous volume of zoos that I've visited in North America, to have moderate numbers with Bighorn Sheep is fascinating to me. Why is this species far less common than a whole series of African and Asian antelope? Why is this species a quarter of the popularity of American Bison? I never even saw any Bighorn Sheep at all those naff little roadside American zoos that I used to visit. And, adding up the European, Asian and Australian zoos I've toured (circa 200 facilities), I've only seen Bighorn Sheep ONCE and that was at a zoo that recently phased them out!

I've seen Bighorn Sheep at 26 zoos (including at least 8 with Desert Bighorn Sheep):

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Bighorn Sheep – 1975
2- Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (USA) – Bighorn Sheep – 2005
3- Calgary Zoo (Canada) – Bighorn Sheep – 2006
4- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – Desert Bighorn Sheep – 2006

That zebra-striped building in the background is the old Elephant House at Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) and when the last pachyderm left 20 years ago it was converted into a Bighorn Sheep exhibit with a big pile of rocks added to the space. This is one heck of an ugly looking blob of textured cement and this structure greeted me in 2010 when I toured Buffalo Zoo (USA). I think this Bighorn Sheep enclosure is still in existence, even though it's quite outdated and sterile. Was this perhaps an old 'Monkey Mountain' exhibit?

There's at least 4 Bighorn Sheep on this craggy mountain at Living Desert Zoo (USA). The fantastic habitat here is quite remarkable, as a visitor can walk right up to the small wooden fence and think there's no animals inside the exhibit. But, given time and waiting for one's eyes to adjust, it's easy enough to always see at least a half-dozen Bighorn Sheep scampering around their mountain home. Superb.

I feel like the main challenge that caprids face compare to other bovids in zoo exhibits is infrastructure. Bison can be housed in a field or paddock and will do fairly well. Caprids need (at least if you don't want wildly overgrown hoofs and all the resultant problems) a mountain or something similar. If you have something natural that you can fence in, that's great. If you don't, you have to build one, and as you show in your photos above, the results of such an enterprise are... variable in quality.

Building a giant rock mountain can be expensive, with the end result being of dubious quality - if you built it in the 60s or 70s, as so many zoo caprid mountains were (often shared with monkeys and with seals or sea lions in the moat), the structure may now be old, decrepit, leaking, too small for current husbandry standards, and overall not worth the effort to replace in the eyes of zoo management. That and, I hate to say it, the species as a rule just aren't that popular with visitors. I think a male Nubian ibex with a full curve of horns is one of the most breathtaking of all ungulates, but to a lot of folks... it's a goat.

To give an example, The Baltimore Zoo's famous "Rock Island," the predecessor to "Penguin Coast" was originally built as a habitat for aoudad - the reason being that in their old, flat exhibit (the current Crane Barn), the aoudads had to get caught up frequently to have their hooves trimmed, a process that was very hard on both the keepers and the animals (which would occasionally escape during these ordeals). Rock Island was made to give them the opportunity to wear their hooves down in a more natural setting, but they only occupied the island for a view years before it was turned over to penguins.
