A male Baird's tapir and a female Malayan tapir were just born last month. An African elephant was born this July. Other new born include a caracal, a southern coati, a chimpanzee, a giraffe and so on.
The new imported animals include a two-toed sloth, a pair of giant ant-eaters, three mane wolves, a pair of striped hyenas, a small Indian civet, European mouflon, a pair of Tibetan eared-pheasants, and the new discovered Chinese cave geckos.
The black muntjacs are off-exhibit now, as well as the Chinese desert cat. But sadly, almost all the monals are said to die due to an epidemic; now there are only one pair of Chinese monals on display inside the panda house.

Hi baboon,

Thanks for the update! Would be really nice to have regular updates here!
(along with some reviews ... This also this pertains to other zoos in P.R. China you have visited ofcourse).

Some impressive breeding results in the tapirs and elephants (also Asiatics as you will no doubt be able to confirm). Baird's tapir are rarely bred in any zoo.

Look forward to breeding updates on the various takin species, caprids, antelope, cervids, wild ass, primates and carnivores in Beijing Zhongshan

What about the Indian and white rhinos? How many are there now in the whites (I have lost track there)?

K.B.

Hi, Kifaru Bwana. I will upload the review soon, but as you know, now it is the final exam time in Chinese universities :(
The new-born Baird's tapir's grandparents came from Mexico in 1970s. And Beijing Zoo has just sent a pair to Shanghai Zoo. Meanwhile, an Asian elephant was indeed born last year, but died later due to disease. When I visited the zoo in October, I indeed saw a young takin, but I can't confirm its birthday~
There are still two Indian and two white rhinoceros in Beijing Zoo now. But in this year, several zoos in China have imported many white rhinoceros from South Africa. As I know, Kunming Wild Animal Park imported twelve, Wuxi Zoo imported four, Nanchang Wild Animal Park imported four, Tianjin Zoo imported two, Zhengzhou Zoo imported two.

Hi, this is the mammal list of Beijing Zoo based on my last visit in this September. Some of them are off-exhibit now, such as all leopard species, black muntjac, pallas's cat and anteater due to the construction. Other species, such as black spider-monkey, Assam macaque, crab-eating macaque and so on, used to on exhibit not long before, but I didn't see them during recent visit, thus I don't know whether they are still alive now~ The aquatic mammals are kept in the aquarium which requires extra entrance fee.

Thanks! That is certainly a very interesting animal list! Hog badger, snob-nosed monkeys and Chinese desert cat, that's awesome!

Beijing Zoo had opened three new exhibitions last week: the new Malayan tapir exhibition, the American Exhibition and the new felid house.
The American Exhibition Area includes both the tapir house and the new constricted American animal enclosure, which is the new home for giant ant-eater, two-toed sloth, guanaco, rhea, bison and so on, and is constricted of Mayan style.
And the Malayan tapirs have a new enclosure now, which resembles a Angkor Wat, according to the website of the zoo.
The new felid house is completed, which is the home for leopard, snow leopard, jaguar, clouded leopard, cougar, cheetah, caracal, lynx, Pallas' cat, leopard cat and so on. But the cages are no bigger than the former ones at all, I don't know who designed this terrible prison. The zoo had a very wonderful snow leopard enclosure design about ten years ago, but I don't know why they abandon it.

@baboon,
Thanx for the update.

Shame the Carnivore section seems on a stale as far as large scale zoo immersion and more natural environments is concerned.

I be happy and interested to see pics of the new Malayan tapir habitat.

On a side note: any interesting breedings and hatchings lately?

Hi, Kifaru,
When I visited the zoo last month, the new Malayan tapir exhibition had not been completed, and I only get this news from the zoo's website. I think I may go to the zoo in several days.
And it seems that there is no interesting breeding recently~~

That's an incredible list of mammal species. Thanks so much for putting it together. So many of these are extremely rare to see outside of China or Asia. I've been to over 100 zoos and seen approximately 800 species of mammals, yet this zoo has a long list of species I've never seen! Probably one of the top 3 zoos in the world as far as having species I've never seen:

1. Himalayan porcupine,
2. red-and-white giant flying squirrel
3. Amur hedgehog
4. Fulvous fruit bat.
5. Siberian roe deer
6. black muntjac
7. red goral
8. Tibetan gazelle
9. argali
10. hog badger
11. Chinese desert cat
12. Spix’s owl monkey
13. golden snub-nosed monkey
14. Yunnan snub-nosed monkey
15. Guizhou snub-nosed monkey
16. northern pig-tailed macaque

5 species of new hoofstock to a hoofstock nut is unbelievable! I'm lucky if I see 1 or 2 species at most zoo's that I'm visiting for the first time. And the snub-nosed monkey's are obviously such a unique animal to see!! Beijing has just been thrust to the top of my my see zoo lists!

Hi, giant eland!
During recent visits I didn't see the Tibetan gazelle :( Although they will be very easy to see when you travel in Tibet~~
The three black muntjacs are still off-exhibit now, and this species is rarely kept even among China's zoos.
The red goral can be seen in three Chinese zoos now: Beijing Zoo, Shanghai Zoo and Guangzhou Zoo.
The Chinese desert cat is also off-exhibit now ~~

The female Indian rhinoceros of Beijing Zoo died :(
I have just came across a webpage saying that the female Inian rhino died on November 7th, 2010, at the age of 31, due to crock up of its circulatory system. Now, there are only one Indian rhino (Beijing Zoo) and two black rhino (Xiangjiang Safari Park ) in China~~

Chinese zoos should really place greater emphasis on rhino conservation education & awareness, considering it is the biggest consumer of rhino horns. Its a missed opportunity.

In my book, the black rhinos have bred at Xianjiang SP and produced a calf.

@Zooish. They have tried with the Indians, only 1 individual imported died quite early on. Then after quite a few years the female received new company ex Liberec Zoo. Only then, the female was already too old. Allthough, sadly passed on ... 31 is a ripe old age. IOW the picture is a little different.

Hello Baboon:

I like to know if all three species of snub-nosed monkeys are part of a nation wide breeding program like the SSP in the US. Especially for the black and grey snub nosed monkeys. And How are they doing in the BeiJing Zoo? Are they easy to view in their exhibit? Thanks

Hi, Yangz! Now only golden snob-nosed monkeys are kept in large numbers in the zoos in China, but I think there is few exchange between different zoos~ Now the largest captive population of golden snob-nosed monkey is in Beijing Safari Park.
Neither the black nor the grey snob-nosed monkey has a national breeding program. The black snob-nosed monkeys are kept and bred in only three places: Bejing Zoo, Kunming Zoo in Yunnan, and Kunming Institute of Zoology. The grey snob-nosed monkeys are kept in four places: Beijing Zoo, Beijing Safari Park, Guiyang Safari Park in Guizhou, and Fanjingshan Reserve. Both golden and black snob-nosed monkeys breed well in Beijing Zoo, but the two grey snob-nosed monkeys have never bred in Beijing. All three species are easy to see, but winter seems better.

By the way, other two bad news: Beijing Zoo has lost all its gorilla and clouded leopard~~
