South Lakes will be changing it's name from Wild Animal Park to South Lakes Safari Zoo from April 2014....

...I don't believe this is an april fools, but correct me if it is :p

I'm getting this from FB too - shared by various freinds. How does someone walk out of a lemur exhibit with lemurs in their bag/under their jumper? Don't they have CCTV in walkthough exhibits (to protect themselves as much as anything in case of bites or accidents)? Are there no staff watching what goes on? It should not be possible in a well managed zoo or animal park to walk out the door with the exhibits.

If you have ever visited this place you wouldn't be asking, any of the questions that you did in your post!

I've not been myself but everything I have heard has not been good. If a zoo/park is in such disorder that someone can walk off with the animals in broad daylight then I do wonder if such a place should even be open.

Put it this way, Wenxue - there is not so much a walkthrough lemur exhibit, more the lemurs are free to roam across about 50% of the zoo, as are a number of other species, and it is not unknown to find them wandering outside of the official "walkthrough" area ;) add in the fact they have a lot of highly unsuitable species mixed into exhibits, and the poor condition of many of the fences and barriers, and you have an interesting collection indeed! Thus it is quite possible for any number of species to go missing - it is even possible the lemurs were not stolen, but eaten by some of the other stock, with the theft story being used by the collection to cover it's own back!

It seems they have opened a row of exhibits for red squirrel conservation at South Lakes. A new conservation project (Source: FB page).

Now with the Kordofan giraffe reaching maturity hoping that they will breed soonest.

I would love to know whether that bull group of various assorted Rothschildt's, hybrids and reticulated giraffes still exists ..?

It has now been clarified that it was the sumatran tiger.
BBC News - Cumbria tiger attack: Sarah McClay dies of her injuries

i have personally been to SLWAP and even though it is not the best zoo, it has done a lot of work in the conservtion of the specie, so I stroingly believe that the animal is not going to be euthanized.
Apart from this, the habitat for the sumatran tigers is quite nice, loads of vegetation, different from the jaguar/snoe leopard exhibit which is quite bald.

condelenses to both families

The SL Facebook page is reporting:

A pair of Lowland Paca have been introduced to Giant otters. Another unusual David Gill mix. Reindeers have been introduced to the 'African' Paddock, again very unusual. The only good news from this (And this week's tragedy) the pair of Tayra have been reported mating.

I thought Gill was shutting down the FaceBook page? That's what he said last night.

And I see Gill has no problem just quickly acting like nothing unusual has happened and getting along to business as usual.

When I visited some years ago I saw, in one of the paddocks, a dead Ring-tailed lemur being eaten by a Cheetah.

I'm not sure I'd trust giant otters with paca! Aren't paca rare in the UK?

Ahhh, another predator/prey mix at South Lakes! :p

Lowland Paca are indeed pretty unusual in the UK - South Lakes has a pair, Newquay has a single individual, and Amazonworld also holds the species - although i am unsure as to how many individuals they hold.

Amazonworld also, last I heard, hold a pair of Mountain Paca - other than one collection in Russia, the only place outside the native range with the species I believe.

The next new species to be announced for the expanded part is Wolves. Six will arrive shortly once building work is completed...

I'm not saying what species of wolf ;) but if you want to know then go onto the parks Facebook and click on the latest photo of Super Gill before reading the comments. All is revealed
