I hope she can fully recover but does anyone know how likely a full recovery is for a baby giraffe with a dislocated leg?

Don't think *adult* giraffes cope well with dislocated limbs, so your guess is as good as mine for a calf.

She really did seem to be suffering yesterday and was just dragging the leg with her, as its a back one she can walk in a fashion but when she was turning it was getting stuck over her other one causing her to wobble and become a little wary of moving around.
Really hope she can pull through!

The prognosis is not a good one.

it is possible the muscle will not repair and will in fact deteriorate to the point of loss.

I once looked after a dog for friends of ours that, had ran into the house with is front leg hanging limp possibly through rough and tumble with one of their Alsatians eventually the leg withered and despite the vets advice i managed to get our friends to have the leg amputated, as Max couldn't get around with the dead weight in his way.
He was only a small dog though and the loss didn't impact him much after wards in fact the fuss he got from people more than compensated I'm sure.
How it would effect the balance of a giraffe is another matter

A little bit of sad news... Belle our beautiful female West African Giraffe calf had an accident yesterday when her Aunt who is due to have a calf very soon brushed past her and the simple slow easy movement dislocated Belles left back leg. Belle is having the best treatment and we are watching the situation . She can still walk with a limp and we are hoping for a recovery.

One three week old calf. One heavily pregnant female. And the house is open, a media scrum appears to be positively encouraged, and the two animals mixed.:eek::eek:

As observed previously ligament damage is an area in giraffe physiology you do not want to be. There are 3 significant causes of death in giraffe where ligament / tissue damage occurs / is involved; accidental fall, breaking leg bone / hoof bone and - more slow-motion killer - arthritis. A further danger and one distantly related is ligament / tissue (and organ damage - acute colic) damage due to prolonged anesthesia. If they fail to stand …, basically that is it.

I would rate the chances of this calf from coming thru as minimal. The decision not to let calf and primiparous female bond during a significant and prolonged freeze public out period and not lending the pregnant female and the lactating female any privacy (meaning individually stalled) is / was - in my humble view - not a good one.

BTW: recommendations from the giraffe husbandry protocol would give some pointers here too.

From their facebook page, thinking we all know what they are preparing for!

Update on Belle the giraffe Calf.
So many people are enquiring about Belle who dislocated her hip in a very simple freak accident a few days after her birth, thank you for caring. The news is not good and we should not expect it to get better for her. We have arranged for one of the top Zoo Vets in the World to visit us next week for an opinion on what is best for her. . We are sorry we cannot say more at this time

2nd Giraffe calf born today - gender as yet unconfirmed. No update on the injured first calf yet.....

Belle is still hanging on ... As far as i know she was receiving treatment and a specialist vet was being called. She is pictured standing and apparently walking around but i won't know anymore until i can get there in a couple of weeks - or as soon as somebody can drive me there haha!

...surprise surprise - the Giraffe house is still open this weekend. Nothing like giving mother and calf a bit of space is there

The following update on Belle was just posted.... someone please put that calf out of her misery :(

So many people have been asking about our first ever birth of a West African Giraffe, Belle. As many of you will know at about a week old she suffered a trauma to the hip joint caused by a very simple and unpredictable accident when another giraffe simply brushed by her. we have had her examined by a number of Vets and the latest by one of the top Zoo Vets in the world. Because of the nature of the injury and the difficulties in sedating and investigating the injury we have decided to be patient and give her a chance to see if the injury will heal or not. We are assured by our Vets she is not in pain and they will asses her progress in a few weeks time. At this time she gets around really well, even runs, she can get up and down from rest and apart from the way her leg sits sometimes she is doing really well. I hope that alleviates some of the concerns about her immediate condition

according to their Facebook page the lions are in there new enclosure .

does anyone know is the jags are in there new enclosure too. (or is it the tigers).

I'm thinking of going to South Lakes tomorrow. Does anyone know which big cats are on show or getting public feeding? I really want to see the Jaguar and Snow Leopard so can change my day of attending to suit.

The Facebook page is currently down after Gilks 'rant' about gay marriages on his personal page. Lions have moved to new dire. Snow leopards, jags and tiger will be on show. They usually feed snows at 12 and others at 2:30 if I remember rightly. You could be unlucky and go on a starve day mind...

what is this meant to say ("dire")?
