1. Do you know where the existing (so-called) 'peralta' male 'Dayo' at South Lakes came from?

2. Are the ones at Doue Zoo quite recently aquired from Paris Vincennes, or have Doue had their own group for some while?

3. Do you know if the 0.3 going to South Lakes were bred at Doue(somewhere it says they are only one year olds I believe)

peralta/antiquorum- same difference?;)

1) Twingo and Itong are both reticulata from Dvur.
Itong died at South Lakes some time ago.
My question remains: what happened ... Twingo (obviously no reticulata now at South Lakes).

(amazing that the BBC should get the facts wrong too ...!!! :confused:)
The photograph gives it away anyway ... well if you do know a thing or 2 vis a vis giraffe ... that is. A journalist must check a story-line ..., the BBC has the Natural History unit no? :D

So 'Dayo' and the females coming from Doue all actually originate from the same source(Paris) then- not surprising given the rarity in European zoos. At least it ensures the group being set up at South Lakes will continue to be pure- whether referred to as peralta or antiquorum...
 
The comments about the giraffes not being peralta have been deleted, as have South Lake's response to these comments. I've been told that an additional comment that I didn't see was made, and that it was exceptionally rude.

Yeah, he deleted all my comments after i believe i told him that perhaps he should just call them 'West African' giraffes instead of educating people the wrong name, but that i was still looking forward to the new Giraffes. His reply was very rude i believe he said something like 'there are many narrow minded individuals with nothing better to do than spend all day on their laptops picking about names of animals they know nothing about' He also said that the name was meaningless and all Giraffes were Giraffes or something. What a tool!'

- from the person whose comments disappeared :o - though it's not the first time he has told somebody they know nothing about the subject, when he knows nothing about the person.
 
According the park's Facebook page the first two Giraffe's should of arrived on Wednesday 12th January. Unfortuntly there's been an issue with the paperwork that couldn't be sorted straight away and for that reason the first two are still in France. It's now planned that if they can sort out the issue out then the single female that should of left last, will leave France today and be at South Lakes tomorrow (15th January) It's expected that the remaining pair will arrive in the first part of next week if all goes to plan
 
Regarding the peralta Giraffe the first female is named Katoumi and is one years old she arrived from Doue la Fonataine.The other two female's will not arrive until March.
 
Yet more news :rolleyes: for those of you who did not know Kadi the Sumatran Tiger cub has been moved to the lion house as she is to big for the vet centre.
 
I have recently found out that South lakes used to house gemsbok.

Does anyone know how many, where they came form or where they went?

They certainly did have Gemsbok in the early years, where the giraffe/rhino paddock is now. Apart from confirming that I can't help I'm afraid.

So bit of a useless post, really, except to note that at that time, Gemsbok were the only really big animals the park had, as I recall - pre-big cats, rhinos, giraffes etc.
 
another bunch of negative comments and what do you mean " a balls up again" ? ISIS shows the latin name as Peralta. and whatever they are still the only West African Giraffes in the UK. the quality of the contributors on this site has really sunk from being constructive and reasoned to personal and seemingly damaging. You are supposed to be zoo supporters and yet you do a far better job than Born Free at damaging zoos with your comments. they are watching every post on here and using them to close all zoos in Europe and without any doubt
Zoo Chat is their focus right now to gather evidence to make that happen... well done all you very negative contributors... you are making Born Frees life so easy !! Rather than be so damaging why dont you try to be constructive and positive because that is what this site was set up to do.

you do realise that your own attitude undoubtably has very damaging effects on how people perceive South Lakes? I certainly don't have any strong urges to go there when you present your opinions in the way you do. As for the Born Free nonsense: seriously? If they could close zoos by using comments on Zoochat as ammunition then South Lakes would have been closed down years ago! Zoochat wasn't set up for bunny-huggers to chortle over a newborn meerkat, it was set up to discuss zoos in all ways, pros and cons, good and bad, big and small.


p.s. you do know this thread is almost a year and a half old?
 
Sadly it is this kind of attitude from you that gives a real impression that you are all so well informed. It is so clear by the majority of comments and questions that zoo philes as I believe someone has stated are on here are in fact wanna bees and have nothing else better to do with their lives that think they are better...
i come on here every now and then when I get a reminder... and when I do I an always reminded how small minded this group actually is. you carry on whinging and commenting and just see how much of this is used by Born Free as I have read yesterday that they are monitoring it all the time and finding the comments most useful.... do not be deceived to think your comments are not being used to ruin zoos in Europe because they certainly are and you are misguided to think otherwise.

Considering this site is online for quite a few years, we must have ruined quite a few zoos by now... :(
