South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes / Safari Zoo Closure

South Lakes Safari Zoo's land owners pledge 'urgent' improvements - BBC News

The Giraffes are being rehomed - the three females are off to French zoos and the male will go to another UK collection.

ZIC will take over the site from 1st January and as well as rehoming a number of animals, they also promise major investment focusing on animal welfare. The park will remain closed for the foreseeable
Are their plans already somewhat in the public realm? What is the actual plan going forward with ZIC and their management and purpose of the site?

What concerns me is that a quick search on companies house shows David Riviera (formally Gill) seems listed as a shareholder of ZIC. Wether this still stands or not, any association with Gill does not bode well for the future of the zoo.

You really couldn’t make this up…

He now shares the same surname as Dr Nick, the Simpsons character whose medical background is as dubious as this guy’s animal welfare credentials!

“These gloves came free with my toilet brush!”

I would be interested in knowing who are the members of ZIC, and what zoo management experience they have, or not ?

The directors of ZIC are as follows:

John Clive Bramagh - a trustee of the WildLife Foundation charity, which is the in-situ conservation wing of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, but per his biography on the WLF website has no experience in conservation or zoo management.
Richard Philip Brown - I don't know anything about this individual but looking around online, although I haven't been able to find any definitive information to confirm this, he *may* be the Richard P Brown who is Professor of Animal Evolution at Liverpool John Moores University
Janette Louise Kemp - no direct experience with zoo management AFAIK, but she is the partner of the former Yorkshire Wildlife Park director (and founder) Steve Minion.
Michael James Robinson-Leason - former financial director of Yorkshire Wildlife Park and former Chief Financial Director of the aforementioned WildLife Foundation charity.
Colin Rose - I don't know anything about this individual and cannot find anything online relating to him.

According to his listing via the ZIC link on companies house, Colin Rose is the Director of an adult nutrition firm and an education firm as well as a management company which appears to be for the purpose of him performing consultancy / contracting (in addition to ZIC and a number of companies which have been dissolved). There’s no apparent zoo link beyond ZIC.

Thank you. As I suspected, a strong relationship with YWP. As you say, possibly these people may not have a history of zoo management, , if that makes a difference, only time will tell. Do you think that any of them actually own any of the animals currently on site? Also, would any of them have any influence on the bad publicity that the current owners have been subjected to?

Thank you TLD
There does indeed seem to be a link to (former?) YWP people, some of whom I think had a Woburn connection prior to that.
The original YWP land lease was a quite short-term one, so they may well be interested to 'do it all again'?
Your list did not include Gill/Rivera - so not a Director, simply a shareholder maybe?

The departures are starting - the 4,0 Canadian lynx are returning to Hamerton Zoo where they were originally born. It has been stated on the zoo’s social media that the tiger pair will leave once the collection closes.

where would the rest of the animals go ?

Animal protection groups, Freedom for Animals and The Animal Interfaith Alliance have lodged their objections to the new Tebay venture.
Freedom for Animals said, due to the considerable negative impact on the character of the area and its threat to the countryside and its natural wildlife, this application should be refused.
The Animal Interfaith Alliance raised concerns over poor animal care at South Lakes Safari Zoo.
The planning application statement for the new venture says." The visitor attraction would not be opened as a zoo and access would be strictly limited to a pre-booking system and guests staying in on site accommodation ".
I think that if Advocates for Animals also get involved, the new venture will have a battle on their hands.

Planning applications are - or should be - determined by adherence to planning law and policy, not on the basis of who chooses to object so I don't see why the involvement of Advocates for Animals should make any difference.

I agree, however, when Advocates for Animals got involved with the application for Zoo2U to move to Holmes Chapel, their application was refused. I said at the time that this could set a problem for the future, we will have to wait and see.

Visited the zoo today 29/12

Top walk through section closed to general public seemed to be open for tours (bears to top avery)

List of what we saw:

Meerkats (2)
Giraffe (2 Africa) (3 top)
Rhino (6)
Peacocks
Wilderbeast (1)
Honey badgers (2)
Kangaroo
Wallaby
Emu
Andean Bears (2)
Red ruffled lemurs
Capabara
Red panda (unseen)
Cotton topped tamarin
Tapir (2)
Otter (1)
White ruffed lemur
Ring tailed lemurs
Sumatran tiger (1)
Simang
Gibbons
Spider monkey
Maned wolf (unseen)
Hamadryas baboons (apx 30 inc several babies)
Snow leopard (1)
Jaguar (unseen)
Lion (1 male 1 female)

Lots of people milling around.

Bears enclosure much improved since our last visit. Lots of buildings look like work is needed. Vulture Avery completely empty - around five macaws in Avery type cages inside. Sloth may be housed in top building.

Really feel for staff, many of which looked gutted about the closure when people asking about the future of the animals.

Only two more days left now. It seems they remain very tightlipped about the actual reason for closure and have avoided any form of explanation. Merely moving on to promoting their new venture. I'm sure some of their regulars would like to ask not only where their animals are going but why... but it seems they are not being given that option.

Haha we visited on the same day, I had a similar list besides:

Red Panda (2)
Sumatran Tiger (2)
Maned Wolf (2)
Jaguar (2)

The Sloth, Stan, is also still in the original enclosure (former Giant Anteater, Pygmy Hippopotamus)
