It has been speculated elsewhere on this site that South lakes MAY be getting a batchelor group of African elephants.

How much land do South Lakes have at their disposal?

Where would the animals come from?

Could South lakes provide a stimulating environment for elephant?

Remember this is only rumour mongering only nothing has been confirmed.

Would be interesting to know if anywhere has African Elephants mixed with white rhino, giraffes & baboons? ;)

I think Boras zoo in Sweden mixed their African elephants with giraffe, zebra and antelope for a time on their savannah.
Beekse Bergen in Holland mix their African elephant group with a colony of Hamadryas baboon (the former Windsor SP baboons).

South lakes, could potentially just build indoor bull facility near there existing savannah enclosure.

Are they still planning to move the zoo to just off the M6?

If they were to keep a batchelor group of eles, they'd probably be quite young.
Can you imagine the problems they would cause in a mixed exhibit, especially with Rhinos?

As far as i know the plans to move are dead now and they plan to stay where they are.

I heard that this was very successful, with the baboons enjoying riding on the elephants, and the elephants not minding at all. Would like to see it in the UK, but maybe not best tried with a bachelor group of grumpy male eles.

I think zoogiraffe means never keeping any species of elephant before, so I guess it's down to South Lakes and Marwell (I reckon South Lakes edges it at the minute though)

I don't think Marwell was mentioned before zoogiraffe said that some of us had already guessed the correct place.

I can't see Marwell getting them how would provide a big enough hardstanding in the winter for them? :p

hmm marwell is opening anew african savannah next year but elephants are not part of plan as far as i know so i recon south lakes
