Toronto Zoo Southside African Rainforest Pavilion Renovation now underway!

Where do they plan on holding the mandrills and ibis's? Where are the RRH? Can't wait for cunstruction to start!

mandrill and ibis in the health centre, rrh and pygmy hippo in the lower elephant/hippo holding area

Just to let everyone know, there are plans to get
- Radiated tortoise (http://inkart.net/animals/images/large/radiated_tortoise.jpg)
- Angolan Python (http://www.australianaddiction.com/AN06_GFNov.jpg) Very rare species)
- Spiny Tailed Iguana's (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/Black_Spiny-tailed_Iguana-27527.jpg)
- Tomato Frogs (http://www.lonestardigital.com/Nikon950/Sample Pix/Tomato_Frog.jpg)
- Meller's Chameleon (http://petzotics.com/Lizards Images/mellers-chameleon.jpg)
- Mantella Frog (http://mantella.amphibiancare.com/articles/images/mantella_guide.jpg)

Right know the zoo has Radiated tortoise, tomato frogs, and mantella frogs (3 species(yellow, green and black and another)

The zoo also plans on keeping Dottie on exhibit in the african pavilion and creating new exhibit for her, or the zoo will ship her out on a breeding loan.

Those species are hopefully all going to be exhibited in the african pavilion once the renos are done as well as some other reptiles, and amphibians already at the zoo/or previously exhibited in the pavilion.

Who is Dottie? The nile-soft shelled turtle (or is that named Nelly?)?

The mandrills were moving when I left this afternoon!
Excavation work (for what, I'm not entirely sure) has started in the old Aldabra tortoise yard, and the work inside the building should commence soon!

The lawn-like area between the outdoor gorilla exhibit and the entrance to the naked mole rats.

Oo really? Why are they doing renos there? Do they plan on building an exhibit outside?

OOO, very exciting. Wonder what will be happening here? Probably a garden or small exhibit of some sort

I saw some keepers with critters in dog crates in the closed section - the mentioned Mandrills? :)

Fingers crossed for an outdoor exhibit for meerkats or mandrills, if it's not being made for a new species :) Thanks on the head's up for the new species, Quartz! Those Tomato frogs are really neat looking.

When were you at the zoo Meaghan? I would love to see an outdoor exhibit for mandrills!

Ungulate is the space with the renos you are talking about not viewable to the public or is it?

I know Meaghan Tomato frogs are very neat. There are a large variety of african species in the animal health centre that the zoo has been dying to put on exhibit. (one of the reasons for the reno)

I think its a bit thick in bushes so it's a harder area to see

Just thought i'd mention, I believe Dottie had a mate a few years ago (Garth?)

He was beginning to have health problems and he was VERY fat so he may have just passed on

I was there today :) I think it's a public area, they were making a trench of sorts - moat?

Moats eh, well unless they intend on containing plants :p they must have an animal of some sorts in the plan (Or maybe its just piping or electric work :S)

Yep, could have been piping work. I can imagine a lot of the piping at Toronto Zoo is up there in the years, aside from the renovated area. Best to get everything done!

Who are Dottie and Garth? Mandrills?

Then the animals were probably mandrills as Ungulate said however that seems a bit weak to carry mandrills in, I know the meerkats are carried in them all the time.

How big were the trenches? I think they may be building a way of some sort, I don't think there is enough room to have moats but who knows.

Dottie and Darth are nile soft shelled turtles. Darth passed away and only Dottie is at the zoo.

The trench was fairly deep (about four feet). Thanks for clearing up about the names! I remember that guy now. He was on Zoo Diaries.

Well it could be piping (probably is) or they may possibly be making an outdoor mesh area to have mandrills? I don't know we can hope for the best!
