Southwick's Zoo Southwicks Zoo News

The male Lion cub has been named L.J in honor of his father, Leroy. The female is yet to be named, and guests could submit name suggestions at the Parakeet Landing Gift Shop.
The ponies at Elk Horn Livery Stable are now walking on a lead.

"A Peacock Party" will now be at 3:00 P.M. on Mondays instead of 3:30, from now until June 28th.
Apparently, Aoudads, Red Kangaroos, and sheep have been born at the zoo recently.

A Two-Toed Sloth family (Looks like Linne's Two-Toed Sloths) have gone on exhibit near the Chimpanzee exhibit.
Remember Capuchin Monkey baby Chip? He is now on exhibit with the other Black-Capped Capuchins.

Here's a video of how the sloth exhibit was built:
Also, important news! A new cheetah exhibit will open this June!

The female Lion cub was named Levanna, a mix between Savannah and Leroy (names of her parents.)
The one and half year old Cheetahs, Kate and Logan, will go on display soon as their exhibit is near completion.

addendum: From last weeks Zoo Keepers diary posting:

As many of you may know, our elderly male lion Leroy may not be with us much longer. He is very old and his kidneys and hips are failing him. Working with animals, we see many births and unfortunately many deaths as well. No matter who the animal, it is never easy. Those of us who have cared for Leroy for over 20 years have known his time will come and it has been an honor and priviledge to care for this incredible animal with an amazing soul. We have received a lot of wonderful messages and well wishes for Leroy and are very grateful. His health and quality of life is our top priority and we are keeping him as comfortable as possible. We are proud that he has had a wonderful life here and that his legacy will live on in his offspring.

The zoo opened on Saturday, April 12th.
In addition, the juvenile lions have been introduced to the adult lion yard. I assume Savannah, the adult female, has been sent to another zoo by now.

Zoo babies born recently include Domestic Goat kids, Warthog piglets, Pot-Bellied Pig piglets, and a Brazilian Tapir calf.
The zoo is also starting to offer "Rhino Encounters", where guests can get close and pet the White Rhinos through a protected barrier.
