Dartmoor Zoo Species At Dartmoor Zoo

Hi everyone,
I've recently been viewing the Dartmoor Zoo website to try and work out what species they have on the grounds. However, there isn't a species list and the map is so small i can't make out what has been written on it.

Which leads to me asking if anyone could tell me what species are present in Dartmoor Zoo?

If you look through the gallery both on their website and on here ( under "Other", I believe), you'll find that Dartmoor's species include:

Macaws (Scarlet and Blue/Gold)
Wolves (not sure which species, might be mixed)
Siberian Lynx (breeding pair, I believe)
Jaguar
Sika Deer
Coatimundi (breeding pair, I believe)
Tiger (doubtfully pure Amur though)
Brown Bear
Raccoon
Llama
Emus
Caracara
Porcupine
Flamingo (only one left, it seems)
Vervet Monkey
Red Fox
Red Tailed Boa
Serval
Tarantula

I think that the lions have died or been moved, same withe puma(s) and Ronnie the Tapir died a couple years ago. There might be more species gone or come since, but those are the ones I know of :)
 
They have a pure Amur Tiger called Tazmin born at Blackpool and moved to Dartmoor in 2001 ish.
The other 3 are her sister Tammys cubs who are Blotch and Stripe and their younger brother Vlad who are hybrid.
Im pretty sure the lions are still there which are Solomon and his daughter Josie.
This may not be 100% true but im pretty sure.

I have just visited their website as it hasn't been updated since last February. I wonder if they are struggling to run the zoo due to economic climate?
 
The 2 lions are Sol and Josie, father and daughter. I went a few weeks ago, it was empty.
They also have 2 new tapirs and a new lynx exhibit. They're also building a meerkat enclosure by the steps to the cafe, it looks awful as its about 6 feet wide at it's widest point, right at nose level with cars, people from all angles, the back wall is very low and the entire base is concrete, allowing them only a couple of inches for substrate.
Whoever designed it should be shot.

The meerkat enclosure sounds very unpleasant and having a maximum width of 6 feet (assuming ashley-h isn't exaggerating :D) is just not right. I find nowadays that most zoos (at least in Australia) have meerkat exhibits that are far to small. An exhibit with dimensions 20mX10m should be the minimum in my opinion.
 
I think Dartmoor's been struggling financially somewhat from the start. As for the meerkats, wouldn't they do better to renovate one of the existing enclosures (old porcupine one springs to mind, and they could prolly fit in the racoon pit ok)?
 
I don't think I'm exaggerating, maybe 8 feet at a push? Either way, it's not good. Far too narrow and it's in the car park for gods sake. Granted it's not the main car park, but it's still in use.

Does anybody know where the lions have gone (if they have), what will be housed in their enclosure and are the tapirs Brazilian tapirs?
 
Oh I meant the park was empty, the lions were still there lol.
 
Am I right in thinking there are six coati?

How many jaguars (and what gender)?

Ah thanks for that Ashely-H i was getting worried about the lions for a minute.
At the moment as far as i know they ahve one male Jaguar Soveriegn as two females got transfered when they took other the park he must be about 10 ish now.One of his sons Aries is now at Paradise Wildlife Park and was hand reared there.
I think there are long term plans to breed him.The enclosure i think is very good but could do with being abit bigger.

In case you've missed this on the Paignton Odds and Ends thread, one of Paignton's female cheetahs is moving to Dartmoor today. I'm planning to visit Dartmoor next week so may be able to see her there.
 
Where is the cheetah going to be housed?

Dartmoor also have Cuisamese, Rheas, Ostrich, Capybara, Lowland Tapir.

Do they still have the two Pink-backed Pelicans.

If they still keep serval, where are they housed? As the former serval enclosure now holds coatis.

I have heard the cheetah will be housed in the former tiger mountain enclosure (below the lions and tiger rock) this enclosure was originaly intended for cheetah! hence the fence height, and doorways into the house!

It will be interesting to see how the cheetah react to being so close to the lions.
 
But didn't soemone say that the foxes live there now? I really hope they aren't going to get shunted out again, that's a much better enclosure for foxes then cheetah
 
Cheetahs would be great for the park and they would look spectacular on the Old Tiger Mountain :)
Perhaps they wanted the foxes to be a permanant move but then they had an offer from Paignton?
If they arent going on Tiger Mountain what about Cheetahs in the field next to the entrance next to the Deer and Tapirs? Thats the only place i can think where they can go at the moment.
But either way its great to see cheetahs there and to see them on Tiger Mountain would be great.
Ive always thought Dartmoor would have great potential and i wish them good luck for the future!
