Member of family Acrididae that lives in grasslands in Europe, north Africa and temperate Asia and produces a series of chirps repeated about every 2 minutes
 
A very widespread and adaptable species, ranging from the arctic tundra to the city centre, eating a variety of foods and active by day and night
 
This species was hunted for it's skin and it's numbers was very low during the 1950s, however legal protection led to its recovery
 
This species is found within about 250m of water, has dark-olive brown colour and white markings with white spots on the back, up to three stripes along the flanks and bands on chin, throat and chest
