Species I may miss

With me due to visit Berlin TP & Berlin Zoo next year I wondered whether any experienced visitors of the collections could help me?

I am curious whether there are are species that are either not signed, not well represented by signage, not on the map or hidden away in farmyard areas that are of particular note?

I have over 500 vertebrate species on my list to hopefully see and missing out on taxa of great rarity would leave me with deep regret as it may be some time before I re-visit these collections in the near future or if I plan to re-visit them at all depending on how much I manage to see.

Both of the zoos maps have are missing some species.
I believe that the on the Tierpark’s current map you can see the reindeer, quite clearly. However, what the map doesn’t show, is an area with a series of enclosures behind the reindeer, in front of the rainforest house.

On my last visit these enclosures (the green cages on the left) were home to Masked palm civets, (I think?) honey badgers, and the final, open-topped exhibit, has European ground squirrels.

On second thought, I’m not positive of the species of ground squirrel but I think that’s what they are.

It may be worth going through zootierliste and making a hitlist, then asking locations for specific species. Both Berlin zoos are kept pretty much up-to-date on there.

You're correct, they're European sousliks.

As for the general question, I think it's fairly tough to miss anything at the zoo - it's all pretty easy to find and there's nothing that sticks out to me as hidden. Just go down every path at one point and you should be fine. With the Tierpark this is of course a bit trickier, but I didn't really have much of a problem with seeing it all in a day, if you're a fairly fast walker you shouldn't miss anything. There are a couple of 'odds and ends' exhibits scattered around but I don't think any were home to particularly rare species. Chaco owls in an aviary near the pelican and wild boar icons on the map I guess? Otherwise I guess again try and go down every path, it's a big place and I remember having a bit of trouble with a couple of deer species.

I have added some of my key species that I still don't entirely know where they are held. Obviously I want to see as many new taxa as possible so narrowing it down to a list of sorts is somewhat difficult.

I have planned that I will do Berlin Zoo & The TP on two consecutive days and the aquarium at the zoo for half a day.

If anyone could tell me if any species are kept BTS that would also be much appreciated.

Thanks for these tips, I will be sure just to comprehensively follow all paths and I think my speed of walking should do me just fine. It's just whether my mother will be able to keep up at my pace. :D

For the zoo, mole rat and springhare in the nocturnal area, vontsira and margay in carnivore house, leafbird in Bird House, Cuckoo in Fasanerie, springbok across the canal, white tailed deer along the path just below the reindeer icon (if I remember correctly). I can't remember where the crane is, the catbird wasn't on show during my visit (unless it was unsigned in one of the walkthroughs) and the pine voles are off-show I think. I don't remember seeing Spectacled ducks in particular but probably one of the lakes in the park?

Tierpark: Mountain goats have their own icon, reedbucks are near the gerenuks and dama gazelles, musk oxen have their own icon (near the mountain goats), pelicans also have their own icon, harpy eagles are in the bird of prey area (bald eagle icon), laughing gulls where the gull icon is (near domestics area), golden cats next to ABH, Thomson's gazelles I think in the new African antelope exhibits with Beisa oryxes, zebras, ostriches etc., pig tailed macaques just to the right of the sign saying pheasantry, liocichlas in the pheasantry (as are all the laughingthrushes and pheasants), Marco Polo sheep in Himalaya area, cormorant where the stork icon is (just below the eagle), takins in Himalayan area and another spot besides which I can't exactly remember (but near musk oxen I think), spur winged goose I can't quite remember.

Normally in the African aviary near the domestic area, next to the horse icon on the right side of the map.

While the lay-out of the old map is horrible, it does include locations of basically all small enclosures:
