I was curious about exotic rarities in Australia, so I put together this list of zoos that are single holders of a species or subspecies. (Some of these species are also kept in private collections, or are feral, but for the purposes of this I’ve included them because these places are where they are accessible for the general public.)

Fishing Cat, Barton’s Long-beaked Echidna, Andean Condor, Tuatara, Eastern River Cooter, Ornate Box Turtle, Chaco Tortoise, Solomon Islands Boa

Nice job with the list; heres hoping more of these species find their way to Aus & NZ

Rockhampton has put their macaques down, and i suspect tasmania no longer has their last crested black macaque. Can anyone confirm that?

Single Holders of Mammals in New Zealand Zoos

The following zoos are the only holder of the following species or subspecies of mammal in New Zealand. I’ve only included facilities that are open to the public - so Hamilton is listed as the only holder of Grant’s zebra (they have a single mare), even though a privately owned facility holds a stallion. Hybrids are not included.

Auckland Zoo:

Indian elephant Elephas maximus indicus
Sri Lankan elephant Elephas maximus maximus
Bornean orangutan Pongo pygmaeus
Hamadryas baboon Papio hamadryas
Emperor tamarin Saguinus imperator
Subantarctic fur seal Arctocephalus tropicalis

Hamilton Zoo:

Grant’s zebra Equus quagga boehmi
Indian antelope Antilope cervicapra
Fishing cat Prionailurus viverrinus

Wellington Zoo:

White-cheeked gibbon Nomascus leucogenys

Addax Addax nasomaculatus
Western lowland gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla
North African crested porcupine Hystrix cristata

I just checked with Tasmania Zoo and Australasia’s only Sulawesi Crested Macaque is still alive and well.

The White-rumped Shamas that are now at Taronga would presumably be another species that could be added to the list of species housed at only one zoo (unless there are some hiding at additional facilities).

I was revisiting this list for my own interest and figured I might as well post an update incase anyone else is interested. It should be accurate as of January 2023.

Nice, here’s a revised list for New Zealand - sadly just omissions following phase outs of Sri Lankan elephant, Scimitar-horned oryx and Caracal.

If I’d included reptiles, I’d add in False gharial as Auckland’s pair are the only False gharial in New Zealand (and the region).

@akasha

I miss stuff all the time. If I'd done a list like this up until 20 minutes ago I would of written that Australia Zoo has 'no Bengal Tigers anymore' when in actual fact they do. I'm sad that Aus' Reptile Park lost their last B+W Tegu. Hope some other individuals come to the park in the near future.

(*Edit) and to further prove my point that we all miss stuff, just found out that indeed it is right the first time and apparently Australia Zoo do in fact no longer have Bengal Tigers lol.
