BioParque do Rio Species list for Bioparque do Rio

Thanks for checking! That's very interesting, ZTL doesn't list Dortmund as a holder of any pure bleyenberghi.
That is because nowadays Dortmund no longer keeps any lions. Lolek was their last, and they sent him to BH so that they could completely refurbish their big cat exhibits. They might acquire other lions when the renovation is done though.

I expressed myself very bad, there was also none in the former holdings. They used to have some "pure" Barbary lions, but seem like they were mixed with the hybrids that were already there.

Ah yes, I see. But for what I know, Lolek arrived here with no identification. Seems like Dortmund only provided the information that he was a pure individual.
The zoo acquired the authorization to breed him and Hanna, but genetic tests had to be made with both individuals before actual attempts of breeding. If the subspecies didn't match, then the individuals would be still kept together, but probably receiving contraceptives. Anyway, before he arrived, Hanna had issues with her ovaries and they had to be removed. This way, only Lolek's tests were made, as they still had plans to breed him, and it was discovered that he is a bleyenberghi.
At the end, the couple didn't work well, and each individual had to be kept in separated exhibits. The institution is now looking for available and matching lionesses, and has plans to include their lions in the EEP.

Lolek was bred at Dortmund. The only way he could be a pure animal is if the zoo kept pure animals, which they appear not to have done.
Well, The zoo's director provided me the information. I don't know many other people that could give better information about animals kept at an institution than it's own director.

Zoos often have misidentified animals and often have uninformed staff. Look at the number of "Barbary lions" or "Bengal tigers" in zoos around the world, for example.

I agree with you. Stuff like the existance of pure barbary lions is strangely still officially accepted by a considerable amount of institutions, and I've no idea why...
Anyway, I understand your point. The information I received though, as I said, from the zoo's director, is that the individual is a pure animal, and belongs to the species Panthera leo bleyenberghi. Knowing many people from BH zoo's staff, I definitely wouldn't say they are uninformed. It's one of the few institutions in Latin America that are part of EAZA programs, and you need a good staff to achieve that, specially in a country that is at least problematic like Brazil. Of course, mistakes could happen (both in Belo Horizonte and Dortmund) Gonna follow the updates of the lions at BH to give more information when I have. There might be the possibility that they make genetic tests in the individual again if they acquire a female, so let's see. Bleyenberghi is the official information we've got for now.

hey guys, do you remember of the little deer that arrived at bioparque, the deer is in the cerrado exhibit.

and i heard the otters changed of enclosure, they are now in the spectacled bear exhibit, and i don't know and the bears will be moved to the black jaguar exhibit, and i have good news, the bengal tiger will be back as soon as possible,

Well, the spectacled bear enclosure is pretty good for otters, but I don't think the black jaguar exhibit is decent for the bears... Are Gabi and the black jaguar living together in the tiger exhibit?
After all, I don't actually understand why the institution is changing their animals from one exhibit to another so often... They seem to be in lack of exhibits for all the animals they keep, and finish making random changes all the time.

i have the same thought as you, i've seen many people complaining about the black jaguar exhibit, they say it's the worst enclosure of the zoo, but i don't think it's the worst at all.

It's not awfull at all, I admit, but it's by no means a great enclosure. The structure only consists in two of the former big cat cages joined together and a little revamped. IMO, if they really wanted to use those cages, they should have at least assembled all of them to make something that could maybe be called a modern zoo exhibit.

yeah, i guess they could make that.

good news, one day the bioparque do rio will get a new animal, andré told me that a zookeeper told him they will receive a mammal, he thinks it will be a jaguar with its cub, but i said that might be a leopard, so he agreed with me that might be a leopard.

Oh, really? Is there any picture of the individual(s)?

Ok, thanks! I hope they are jaguars though, as we're in need of more ex-situ conservation for this species in the country...

i have awesome news, recently andré told me that a zookeeper left the zoo to get the giraffes and bring them to the zoo, i'm hoping the zoo will get 6 giraffes, also think the zebras will arrive together with the giraffes as well.
