---Note ---
Needless to say, this is another category where due to the high number of species in private hands, we have "regained" a fair few species cited as losses in the prior thread, and could well regain several of the species which I have cited here. Some of the major losses are highly unlikely ever to return, of course, and several further species are liable to be lost forever in the coming year.

It should also be noted that although some of the species cited are listed on ZTL as current holdings for Bellingwolde Kleindierpark, I have disregarded this information as this is not only a private collection but - as far as I know - has now shut down entirely.

I'd just like to register my doubt at 100% for this species being held in Europe.

My doubt was hovering somewhere around there too for several years until I obtained a back issue of Zoo Grapevine (winter 2014/15) with a review of the collection by Tim Brown, explicitly citing their time of arrival, origin and rapid demise:

Interesting. Having post-reproductive animals would seem like the only possibility for the account - I do find it difficult to believe that Canada would have approved any export though.

I had a look at Mountain View and amongst the first things that come up are investigations into multiple accounts of animal abuse. Their participation in the Vancouver Marmot programme was halted in 2014, and they closed down a couple of years later.

-- Note --

As previously observed, many of the species which are cited above could potentially return to European public collections at some point in the future due to their ongoing presence (sometimes in high numbers) within private collections; this particularly applies to those species of gerbil and jird which are discussed above. Equally, due to the short lifespan of many rodent species and their tendency towards boom-and-bust populations in captivity, several species which have either returned to European public collections since the original thread, or entered them for the first time, could potentially be added to this thread within the next year or two.

Between these two rodent posts it appears that Europe has probably lost more rodent taxa in the last 23 years than there are species currently in North American zoos. If not more then it's very close!

How did European zoos ever end up with Beach Mouse to begin with?

A lot of those species weren't kept in 2000 either, just failed imports or exchanges with private keepers in the meantime...

Good thing I changed the title of the thread to make it clear that the point of the enterprise isn't to post about species which *were* in public collections in 2000 but aren't now, isn't it :p

I repeat - you not only didn't have a problem with the original thread but participated throughout, yet this time round you seem very invested in only popping up to criticise/critique the basic fact I'm doing the thread in the first place. It's rather draining (especially given the fact I have a lot of respect for you and your opinions) and keeping up my mental energy to create content is tough enough at the best of times.

Renaming the thread to "Species which have been displayed in European public collections in the last few decades but aren't anymore, but hopefully this thread will elicit response from anyone who saw and photographed them in a European public collection" would be far too unwieldy, but (as was the case for the original thread) that was the basic intention as you know.

That is not my intention at all. I don't want you to stop doing this thread. My "motive" behind the comment is that there is a large number of people on zoochat who are complaining about how more and more species are disappearing from zoos and diversity is so much lower than it used to be. To not feed that narrative unnecessarily my main suggestion was that apart from the date when a species ceased to being kept, the date it entered Europe would also be included. You didn't need to change the title, as it was indeed a proper title, though it could be read in a way that implied "all these species were kept in 2000 too" (without meaning it). By providing the arrival date, one could more easily distinguish all those mammals that were just kept by 1-2 institutions for a few years and failed to establish from species that used to have a much longer history like the Arabian gazelle or mountain paca.

I expect that some of the native European species (Voles, Lemmings, "Algerian" Mice...) would be back within the next years, as well of some African and Asian Gerbil and Jird species (depending if they exist or not in the private collections).

I won't lie, seeing Baby's photo got me a little emotional. Makes me so glad I got the chance to see him when I did. Truly an animal you could never forget.

my main suggestion was that apart from the date when a species ceased to being kept, the date it entered Europe would also be included

Unfortunately easier said than done, given the fact the information in question is seldom available, and electing to settle for incomplete and patchy inclusion of that information would be irksome - but I have been trying to indicate when ephemeral species (such as most rodents) have been discussed in the supplementary notes, and highlight the fact some species have popped up several times via the private sector, and shall be more overt in doing so going forward.

there is a large number of people on zoochat who are complaining about how more and more species are disappearing from zoos and diversity is so much lower than it used to be.

I mean, they aren't necessarily wrong per se, even if they are definitely exaggerating the scale by a *significant* margin.

For instance, I cited 31 species within the hoofstock/cetacean post, comprising brief rescue situations (7 taxa), taxa present prior to 2000, in many cases for several years or even decades (18 taxa), and taxa which arrived within public collections in 2000 or later (6 taxa). Given the fact the rescues and 21st century imports represent a zero sum where loss of diversity is concerned, the question is whether the 18 taxa present prior to 2000 and subsequently lost are balanced out by the number of species which have been imported since 2000 and remain present today. As far as I can tell, four species of hoofstock (Chaco Peccary, Philippine Mouse Deer, Beisa Oryx and Gerenuk) fall into this category, so we are looking at a "real terms" loss of 14 hoofstock/cetacean species since 2000. Sadly I strongly doubt the mouse deer will hang on much longer, too.

Incidentally at genus level, we have gained two genera (Catagonus and Litocranius) and lost ten genera (Inia, Cephalorhynchus, Sotalia, Blastocerus, Mazama, Ozotoceros, Tetracerus, Oreotragus, Saiga and Capricornis) for a net loss of 8 genera since 2000.

That said, I think hoofstock will prove to be something of an outlier in this regard - for instance, I think we currently have about five more genera of marsupial in European public collections than was the case in 2000 (although I expect three of these will be lost imminently).

I expect that some of the native European species (Voles, Lemmings, "Algerian" Mice...) would be back within the next years, as well of some African and Asian Gerbil and Jird species (depending if they exist or not in the private collections).

Well, as I said above there are definitely a *lot* of gerbils and jirds in private hands and I fully expect those to come in and out fairly often. The voles and lemmings, not so much I suspect.

A real pitty this species has been lost in public collections but I know there are still a few being kept in ( a ) private collection(s). I'm very sure about this because I take care myself for a small group at a private collection ( :) ) so maybe one day some will end-up again in a zoo :

I very much hope for the opposite thread: species gained in zoos in 20. century (or the last 30 years).

It would be especially interesting to show whether European zoos switch more for conservation of endangered species, or to ABC popular species.

They could be species which were present sometime in the past, but occassional or struggling, but became regular and much commoner recently. For example, Tasmanian devil, giant otter or chacoan peccary. Naturally, there would be an element of personal choice how rare should be a species earlier and what counts as gained currently.

Very glad to hear it; as you know, the loss of the species from European public collections was due to a freak accident - the Krefeld ape house fire wiping out the entirety of their large and regularly breeding flock - rather than general decline.

I'd be interested to work out how many other species have been lost due to similar freak chains of events!
