Species you saw as a kid that your children will likely never see...

What are species you saw in your local zoos growing up that have either been phased out or you think will be phased out by the time you have children?

To keep it simple, I’m saying your local zoos i.e. assume your children won’t be travelling the world and the seven seas to find these animals. If you come from a small country, you can include all zoos in your country as local; if you come from a larger country, use your own judgement to decide what’s local - don’t overthink it.

New Zealand

As a kid I saw:

Arabian camel
Nilgai
Sable
Collared peccary
Chacma baboon
Bonnet macque
Temminck’s golden cat
Bobcat
Leopard cat
Short-beaked common dolphin

Since having kids:

African elephant
Common hippopotamus
Brazilian tapir
Scimitar-horned oryx
Sitatunga
California sea lion

In the future we will lose:

Asian elephant (2022)
Malayan sun bear (probably)

Here's the obligatory unfunny "I will never have children" post so nobody else has to spam it. ;):p

To be fair, it was short sighted of me to word my opening post this way. I will amend it via this post to say “future generations” - be it your descendants or not. :)

I've actually talked about this before, with species I know I've seen (in some instances having seen them many times) before I started my lifelist, but likely will never see again:
- Bearded Pigs at Southwicks Zoo
- Parma Wallaby at Roger Williams Park Zoo
- Weid's Marmoset at Capron Park Zoo

I'm also not sure if I'm just misremembering, but I seem to remember that when I visited the Bronx Zoo in 2009 that I saw an indochinese tiger on the Monorail? Seems unlikely, but that's what I remember seeing. Perhaps it was a malayan tiger. I also likely saw the douc langur at Philly on the same trip, but barely remember it.
