Species you wish your local zoo(s) still have.

Artis Royal Zoo:
Potto
New Guinea ground cuscus
Tamandua
Malayan tapir

Agreed.

Maybe not the most spectacular animals, but I really miss a species of caviomorph in the Small Mammal House, in particular agouti. As long as I can remember golden-rumped agoutis were around in the central enclosures. Agouti, acouchy, lowland paca, mountain paca, chinchilla, degu, Brazilian cavy, rock cavy... caviomorphs were a well represented group in the 1990's untill a few years ago.

The ongoing loss of ungulates at Artis worries me. At first, it was part of the reduction of the collection in general to give more space to the remaining species, but now the diversity is low after the recent losses of wisent (a species of historical importance), sitatunga, chital, nilgai, springbok and river hog.

Furthermore, a species of bear would be nice. Four species like in the early 1990's is not an option, but I liked the combination of spectacled bear with coatis.

No deer in the Netherlands?

Roe deer is reasonably common throughout the Netherlands, and it is not usual to stumble upon one or a few during an early morning birding session. Red and Fallow deer are much more restricted but they can be very abundant locally and are generally not hard to find. Red is all but guaranteed in the Hoge Veluwe (and present throughout the Veluwe area) and Oostvaardersplassen, while Fallow is easily seen in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingsduinen and also reliable at several locations in the Veluwe area.

I figured that Roe Deer were probably common in the area.

Agreed, but I also miss the Jungle by Night or a nighthouse in general in Artis.
I understand why some species have to go because of the lack of room etc but its going with a fast pace now. I have heard stories/rumors about the Small Mammal House and the aquarium if true we would lose even more species...

No deer in the Netherlands?

I meant (white-tailed) deer in the Americas, so I wasn't specific enough. I have seen roe deer, red deer and fallow deer on multiple occassions in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.

Bronx Zoo got rid of its cheetahs and Solomon Island monitors, both species I wish to see return.

Where to begin with Edinburgh really?
  • Bush dogs
  • Aardwolf
  • Asian Golden Cat
  • Pallas' Cat
  • Honey Badger
  • Jaguar
  • African Wild Dog
  • Bongo
  • Striped Skunk
  • Barbary Macaque
  • Rock Hyrax
  • Orangutans/Gorillas (though I would say in this case the Budongo facility is more than fair trade-off)
  • Maned Wolf
  • Marabou Stork
  • There's probably others I'm forgetting/wasn't old enough to appreciate, but also a lot of the things I missed all moved up to the HWP so its not so bad
Highland Wildlife Park (Definitely not as much, and I think it's fair to say that their collection has vastly improved where Edinburgh's dwindled)
  • European Badger
  • Red Fox
  • Wild Boar
  • Pine Marten

Saint Louis Zoo:
  • Chinese Giant Salamanders
  • Komodo Dragons
  • Ocelots
  • Walruses
  • American Black Bears
  • Giant Pandas
They've really run out of room in the Herpetarium, unfortunately -- a keeper told me that they currently keep over 100 snake species alone, but can only put about half of them on display because of space limitations. Hopefully they'll renovate/expand the building in the near future to add more room, like they're doing with the adjacent Primate House and the upcoming Primate Canopy Trails. Space for amphibians, in particular, seems to be a pressing issue for them at the moment.

They had leopard cats? I thought they had fishing cats.

I wish the Monterey Bay aquarium still had vampire squid and flapjack octopus, along with mimic octopus. I'm somewhat sad that there are limited-time exhibits, but they have to rotate them because I don't think that they have much room.

It's hard to complain about that with that new exhibit coming though!
