Species you wish your local zoo(s) still have.

Fact of the matter is that Lincoln Park don’t have enough space for too many animals. They only have the option of rotating them or just downsizing some existing exhibits. That one holding pen for one male Grevy’s Zebra could easily be used for another animal for example.

On the Brookfield side of things, they should give Nile Hippos another shot and refill the old pool. Walruses have this issue where their breeding is just too unsuccessful in the US. It gets depressing just seeing the Olga statue every time.

As for elephants, they should just tear down half of the hooftstock yard, that way a new elephant exhibit can house a whole herd. It’s so easily of a solution yet they never did it due to less funding than Lincoln Park, who gets all the donors.

Agreed on the spacing issues at LPZ. I've noticed the hoofstock yard especially is guilty of that (you mentioned the male Grevy's Zebra, the Sichuan Takins have access to two yards, and I think camels and ostriches have access to two yards as well. I just went to Brookfield for the first time in 24 years a few weeks ago and I saw first-hand how depressed some of it looks. I think people assume that, because they charge for parking and entry, they can afford more, but that's clearly not the case.

- tapir, some of the other hoofstock, and even maned wolves would possibly work in that area behind the primates with the various hoofstock paddocks. I forget what species I saw back there other than takin.
- koala and hyrax could easily be exhibited in Small Mammal-Reptile House.

The hoofstock area includes Grevy's Zebra, Sichuan Takin, Ostrich, Red Kangaroo, Bactrian Camel, Chocoan Peccary and (according to their website at least) Patagonian Cavy, which I did see once but there's no signage anymore.

As for koalas, I think the reason Lincoln Park Zoo never got any new ones after the last one died around 2003-2004 was because they're apparently a pain to care for in captivity (or at least they used to be). I was reading former zoo director Dr. Lester Fisher's memoirs about the zoo and he said the koalas would change their mind every day about what type of eucalyptus they wanted, and (at the time at least) there were only certain states that grew eucalyptus, none of which were near Chicago.

I do wish I knew what happened to the rock hyrax (it used to share the exhibit with the klipspringers), as it only lasted about a year or so, from what I remember.

Zoo Tampa/Lowry Park Zoo has had a few animals that I miss now. I really liked the temporary loans of the Red Pandas and Tasmanian Devils.

Permanent animals that I miss are the Persian Leopards, Naked Mole Rats, Asian Elephants, Cheetah, sloth bear, red kangaroos, and American Bison.

That said, while I miss the animals, some were replaced by animals I like better.
Persian Leopards - Clouded Leopards
Naked Mole Rats - area (Childrens Zoo) demolished and made into much larger Australian area
Asian Elephants - the exhibit is not suitable for elephants
Cheetah - African Painted Dogs
Sloth bear - Sun Bear
Red Kangaroo - Outback Australia Area closed (now storage and parking)
American Bison - replaced with a water flume ride, sadly.
Bison seem like an awful choice for Tampa.

Paignton Zoo - West Caucasian Tur. The herd of 7 was PTS in 2019 because of a TB outbreak, but they still have the perfect exhibit for them.

There's a zoo near where I live called Lake Distrct Wildlife Park, it used to be a children's farm kind of place but rebranded as a zoo with more exotic species in the early 2000's. Way back in the day they used to have American bison, and near their paddock was a recreation of a Native American tipi, though I can't remember what you could actually do in said tipi. Both it and the bison are gone now, but I do still kind of wish they were still there, especially as (after looking it up on Zootierliste) there doesn't seem to be anywhere in the UK that keeps American bison now.

I really missed the snow leopards, clouded leopards, Java mouse-deer, laughing kookaburra, dwarf crocodile, common spotted cuscus, and red giant flying squirrel at Taman Safari Bogor. I love to see these uncommon species so much and their exhibits were great.

I'm very biased with Brookfield in particular and my desire to restore species that have left the collection often outstrips my desire for new animals. I've spoken at length in a dozen threads about aardvarks, and I fantasize quite openly about a baboon/ibex exhibit. We all miss hippos and vampire bat. Cassowary is one I have not been vocal about but do quite miss as well. I love loris but they had an awful habitat. We're due for a new large crocodilian. I love the new Desert's Edge animals but miss what they replaced. We need more monkeys as Tropic World empties, too. Always bummed I never saw kiwi. Walrus are a local icon. We're missing a few good South American animals. I can go on forever.

For the below lists, I started with species I think can/should actually come back, and towards the bottom transition towards species that probably cannot come back but that I do miss, or that I miss but feel satisfied with the replacement.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Grant's Gazelle
Waterbuck
Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin
Secretary Bird
Green Aracari
Patagonian Cavy
Fennec Fox
Sand Cat
Parma Wallaby

Malayan Tapir
American Black Bear

Munich Zoo

Bornean Bearded Pig
Indian Gaur
Now that I currently reside at Munich I guess I can call Hellabrunn my local zoo and make a wish regarding the zoo. I think in addition to the animals mentioned by German Zoo World, I think Malayan tapir, American mountain goat, white-tail gnu, and mouflon would be great (edit: and muskox)
