Chester Zoo Spotting the Duiker

A quick question; could anybody give any pointers to seeing the Duiker at Chester Zoo. I went about 4-5 times on Sunday (and have been many times on my last few visits). The den near the door into the giraffe house was closed, yet there was another small door open behind the Gaboon vipers with a small pile of branches (Duiker food?) just infront of it. For the whole day, it didn't seem as if these branches were touched. There were a few loud people in the building, so I assume that that put her off making an appearance.

Will she be easier to spot in winter when the zoo is quieter? And are Chester looking at getting some more of the Duiker with a plan to breed them at some stage? Obviously if they have more than one it doubles chances of seeing one.

At the moment, I find it strange that there is absolutely no mention of the Duiker around the zoo, and I only know about her from on here. Considering how rare she is (the only one on show in Britain I've heard) I thought that Chester would have it on the website or something? Also, there are no signs mentioning her in the Secret World of the Okapi where she is housed from what I could see. Will there be signs going up soon? She has been there a couple of months now so I would have thought that there was some hint that it was there? So, any tips on spotting her and any answers to my questions extremely welcome :) Thank you all in advance.

On a similar note, on my Sunday visit Dicky would often come into the inside building and look through a little peep-hole in a door. This behaviour was exactly the same as when he is peering at Stuma over the outside fence. My guess is that this is the off-show area where Stuma is being held, and he is trying to see her. Does anybody know if this is likely to be the case, and is anybody at liberty to say why Stuma is off-show (and has been for some time). Please, no speculation on this point as it can lead to people getting the wrong end of the stick, only answer if you know for sure and if the zoo is alright with the information being passed on.

The only Natal Red Duiker (Cephalophus natalensis) on show in Britain, yes. :)

(not the only duiker though - Colchester have 0.1 Blue Duiker, Philantomba monticola, on display)

That is what I meant :). I didn't know which species, but I knew there was another type of Duiker at Colchester.

the door near the vipers is for okapi and the one near the giraffes is for the duiker

And they want a male for the female but they can not source on as there are only 22 natal red duikers in europe

Ahh that puts problems forward then. Are there any in America that could be imported, or is there still a restriction on ungulates? Fingers crossed that they will be able to source one sometime soon.

Also, the door I am talking about really wouldn't fit an okapi through it. (I know there is a big door with a peep-hole, but this is not the one I was refering to). The one I meant is much smaller and can only be seen from certain angles (it is on the front wall of the enclosed bit. The arch-shaped door, I doubt, would have come any higher than my waist.

ah right. I thought you meant the door with the peep hole. There are none in america but there are a few in africa. they will not to be able to get one for a long time yet imo.

Ahh, that is a shame. Does the Duiker at Chester have a name, and have you seen her? I am almost tempted to sit and wait all day, but since I'm not a member yet it would be a massive waste of money (especially if she didn't put in an appearance :D)

I don't think that would make a difference. I've stayed 15-20 minutes and had the house to myself and she still didn't come into view.

I had the same trouble with the blue duiker at Colchester, perhaps I ought to give up duiker spotting and take up meerkat spotting instead.

I have seen her twice and I don't think she's got a name.

Are there any specific times where she is more likely to appear (when food is first put out, opening time, closing time etc?). Have all of your sightings been around a similar time or are they just random times and seeing her really is pot-luck?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just really want to try and spot her soon. I saw the tragopan on my last visit and this is one of the last elusive creatures to tick off my list (that and Azara's Agouti)
