I guess many of you have already seen the review of this place in "Snowleopard's 2024 Road Trip: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia," so I just wanted to share a few extra details and give an update on the species I saw.

This private zoo was founded by a wealthy businessman who made his fortune from crocodile farming. He has a deep love for animals and a passion for keeping 100 lions and tigers, which ultimately led him to create this zoo. It’s located in Ayutthaya Province, north of Bangkok, about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Bangkok (approximately 100 km).

This medium-sized zoo, covering around 10 hectares (25 acres), is packed with over 100 species of animals. Some of the enclosures are pretty old-school, with concrete floors, metal bars, and spaces that feel too small, while others are newer and look a bit nicer. Overall, though, I wasn’t particularly impressed with the exhibits.

The zoo is home to several rare species, including what appears to be all species of douc langurs — possibly the only place outside Vietnam where you can see them all. This impressive collection, however, does raise questions about how some of these rare animals were obtained.

Here’s a list of the animals I saw. Sorry I didn’t manage to note all the birds and reptiles.

Impressive list of animals on the collection. You are right to be somewhat critical how some of the species may have been obtained.

I found an article from 2023 about smuggled tree-kangaroos in Ambon, Indonesia that suggests the trade of those animals is illegal in Indonesia. The grizzled tree-kangaroo is also found in Papua New Guinea though.

Personally, I think it's possible that the Grizzled Tree Kangaroo kept at Sriayuthaya Lion Park may have come legally from a zoo in Indonesia. Why do you think it's an illegally imported individual?

I didn't make any comment about the ones at Sriayuthaya Lion Park, I have no information about that. What I am saying is, the article explicitly states that the trade of this species is illegal in Indonesia. So that's one thing to take into consideration.

Is this a first for Thailand?

Spotted Hyena
They are not a first-time birth in Thailand. Some of the zoos under the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand have already successfully bred them — I think Khao Kheow Open Zoo might be among them.

Striped Hyena
From the information I have, this is the first public zoo in Thailand to have successfully bred them. It’s actually the second litter here at Sri Ayutthaya.

Grizzled Tree-Kangaroo
Safari World is the first public zoo in Thailand to have successfully bred this species.

I don’t have any information about private collections that are not open to the public.

Thank You so much Zz123. Sure I did not explicitly said, but my query was about the grizzled tree kangaroo breeding!

Be interesting to know what the status for grizzled tree kangaroo is these days both in Indonesia and Thailand (as you signal more zoos in Thailand keep them). I would suspect the species may be around in other S.E. Asian countries too.
