Saint Louis Zoo St. Louis Zoo News 2025

(my first post ^_^)
I spoke to an employee today who told me that 1yo Amur tigers Ussuri and Sungari are in the process of being moved to other zoos further north (no other info about destinations). I haven't seen Sungari out since 1/11, and she said he may already be en route. Ussuri is still in the exhibit with his sister and mother but is slated to move out as soon as possible. (Apparently they were both supposed to leave weeks ago but were delayed by weather).
I was also told that the zoo is planning to turn the now-empty lion enclosure into a habitat for their Amur tiger Maxim, while Darya and Reka will stay together in the old tiger habitat.

Does this mean the zoo will no longer have lions?
Likely so at least for the foreseeable future, but while releasing information about Cabara’s passing, they did emphasize that they will continue to support the SSP for lions.
I also expect that the Big Cat Country area will likely undergo a renovation of some sort (not sure how far ahead into the future that would be), so if that’s done they could attempt to bring them back in again - they’re certainly a guest favorite at any zoo.

Saint Louis Zoo Launches New Polar Bear Conservation Initiative

The Saint Louis Zoo in St. Louis, Mo., has launched a new conservation initiative that will support research, fieldwork, and outreach to help both wild polar bears in the Arctic and the people who live among them.

The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Center for Polar Bear Conservation is the first new conservation center created by the Zoo since 2019. It will be an adaptable conservation program dedicated to safeguarding the species.

The polar bear is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and faces significant threats including loss of sea ice habitats due to climate change.

It’s incredibly important that we better understand and protect this species now more than ever,” said Center Director, Julie Hartell-DeNardo, who also serves as the Kevin Beckmann curator of carnivores at Saint Louis Zoo. “We hope deepening the Zoo’s longstanding support of this species can make a real impact for these magnificent bears.”

The Center for Polar Bear Conservation is now one of 17 Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute centers dedicated to the conservation of animals and their habitats across the globe, from the hellbenders of Missouri to the frogs of Ecuador and Grevy's zebras in Africa.

Interesting, wonder why they aren't on the map? I'm visiting this summer (hopefully) any ideas on how to see them? What time is best?
We went around 10 am and all the animals were very active! The hyenas had been fed around 8 am and they were still chewing on bones by the time we got there. The painted dogs were pacing around the exhibit. Signage stated that they are new to the habitat so I'd expect viewing might be limited based on their comfort level. Can confirm that 1.0 polar bear 'Kali' was also still on display when I visited on Monday! Just saw the zoo confirmed that he has been relocated to Toledo.
