Star Trek

saw it yesterday. It was MUCH better than I had expected. Witty references to the old series, cool effects. Sure, some plot oddities, but it's fiction and what do we expect from a movie?

The nice thing about an alternate timeline is that in future movies, they can choose either or neither.

I've finally seen it a couple of weeks ago, and I liked it. Off course, some things didn't match with the star trek canon and all, but the movie was great. It had some great special effects, a lot of action and humour, and like the new batman and james bond movies, it was more raw, and a little bit more realistic looking, for instance, the shuttles had rust on them, the interior of the ships are somewhat more of what you would expect from a spaceship.

Vulcans always felt superior above humans in the series, now they are even complete racists. Young Kirks gets a severe beating in a bar, and uhura has a roommate who doesn't do much else than dating boys. These are things you never saw in trek, but make sense. Star trek always had a message of tolerance, but what they portrayed in the movie compares a lot more to human nature.

I don't like the new romulan look however. They look like real villains now, instead of a race with it's own civilisation. They really shouldn't have done that.

I agree with your assessment of the Romulan 'look' - I preferred the look they had in the TV series' (after all, they are a sister race of the Vulcans). But I wouldn't call the Vulcans 'complete racists'. They're just a little insular and snobbish.

And I loved the fact that Nimoy was in it, and not in a quick cameo but a significant role.

:p

I'm more of a star wars fan hehe. MULTIPLE, if not, too many plots. Love it. I haven't seen this movie though. I'm sure I'll see it on dvd soon.

I now have the movie on DVD and I still love it. I still wonder why they claim the extinction off the romulans after the destruction of romulus. After all, they have an empire, with probably multiple colonies, some of them surely must have reached a huge significance in the empire, and house large populations. Extinction is unlikely, to say the least.
