Striped Skunk in UK Zoos

After many years of hardly being represented in uk collections, it seems the Striped Skunk is making a comeback! Ive always thought them to be under rated, and think they make great education or presentation creatures. I know of several zoos keeping skunks (London, Edinb, chessington) Has anyone witnessed them at other establishments?

The numbers of privately held specimens has increased greatly in the last few years, i have been keeping them myself for some time and we had to originaly obtain info from keepers in the USA . I understand that is now illegal to de-scent (remove scent glands) skunks in the uk.

yes it is illegal to perform the operation here, but if they are imported having had it done then it is alright.

Stapely does indeed have a pair and their off-spring,also Twycross had one in the pets corner but itwas only their for about 2 months.

There is a college in Nantwich (Reaseheath) and on their animal care section they have a pair of female skunks. (well it was 2 females when i was there last year)

Ah, I can just imagine a skunk being used in an education programme turning round and spraying the entire group of kids. Awesome.

lol, but i think they said that they had had the scent glands removed before arriving at the college (which actually has got quite a decent collection; Ring-Tail Lemurs in a walk through enclosure, Zebu, Brazilian Tapir, Capybara, Rhea, African Porcupine, the skunks, 2 family groups of meerkats, a pair of marmosets, typical pets, a snapping turtle, iguanas, many species of snakes and lizards, quite a few tarantulas and scorpions and many species of birds) Sorry about that little tangent ;)
