Colchester Zoo Subu the lion dead?

I'm pleased Subu had a long life and I've seen him for a long time now:). I really want Colchester Zoo to do as Pertinax origanally suggested and move the gelada babboons into a HAHA very fake rockery colchesterish exhibit.;) As we all are now growing in our dislike towards their exhibit.

I don't agree that we should get rid of Sasha as I think he's a lovely animal and I think that when he dies his enclosure would be best off with Jaguars or possibly snow leaprds?

I really wouldn't miss lions at all if they were out of Colchester for some years. Maybe a new exhibit in a new part of the zoo 1 day.................

Subu was due to be 21 on the 22nd of April this year, So he did very well to live so long.
His siblings Massing and Ashanti have both died. Ashanti died in about 2006/7 or so and Massing died long before that.
So out of the trio he was the last remaining.
End of an Era for Colchester.

It would definately be putting the area into a better use I think.
I hope Colchester if they do go into Africans again do not breed them. I think a group of males would be the best use of the Zoo at the moment, It would free space up in other collections for futurer 'purer' individuals and give Colchester those big impressive males that the visitors expect to see.
However I doubt many could live up to the image of Subu!

I very much doubt that Colchester will only exhibit males. The previous setup worked well though I would love to see 2 females this time.

"The enclosure is currently unoccupied during this time, in the future we will look to bring in more lions and hopefully set up a breeding programme for this species."

Quote of the Colchester zoo facebook page. More Lions same enclosure.

That was inevitable really.;) I expect they will get them a.s.a.p. too, in order to fill the empty enclosure.

I would put money on them getting at least one (most likely a male) from WMSP. They have so many that it would seem silly not to take the opputunity and rehouse one whilst they have the chance.

Oh dear! It isn't actually on their website I don't think.

No I don't agree that Colchester "needs" lions it's got plenty of popular animals.

I know I'm not the only person on here who would say that.

RIP Subu, I agree he was a magnificent lion and a ripe age too. He did seem sad after Leoni died though when we visited the last few times.

Some more info about his death:

Sad Loss of male African Lion, Subu
Colchester Zoo is very sad to announce that our male African Lion Subu sadly put to sleep on Thursday 1st April.

Subu was being closely monitored by his Keepers after some concern for his health and following an initial Veterinary examination it was decided that he required further medical investigation. A final veterinary examination was carried out on 1st April, and on veterinary advice the decision was made that the only option was to put him to sleep. Evidence from this final examination and X-Rays taken showed that Subu had been suffering from chronic active spinal arthritis, which had caused the symptoms that were seen in his deteriorating health.

Subu was born at Woburn Safari Park on the 22nd April 1989, and came to Colchester Zoo on the 8th December 1989, when he was just 8 months old. He was a prominent figure at the Zoo, and his roars could often be heard throughout the park around his feeding times.

Subu was one of the zoo’s great characters, well known to staff and visitors alike. He will be greatly missed by all the staff at Colchester Zoo.

The enclosure at Lion Rock is currently unoccupied during this time.

Imagine the headlines...

"BORN FREE FOUNDATION IN SPOUTING REACTIONARY NONSENSE SHOCK!"

;)

Thanks for that Karen - nice to know they're as sensible as ever! :D

I think Subu is becoming more famous since his death....!!

Born Free make me laugh with their "animals shouldn't be in zoo's"... if it wasn't for zoo's conservation, education and preservation, there wouldn't be any animals left to act as ambassadors to their wild cousins,

Then when disease or poaching gets the wild cousins, B.F will then be wishing they backed zoo's ambassador animals.

The fact is,
Born Free keep animals in captivity lets face it there rescue centres are just large enclosures.
And before the construction of those rescue centres they kept all the cats in the Big Cat Centre (which is now the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Kent) and the enclosures there are certainly no better then that in other collections in the country.
But with Born Free you can never win im afraid.

actually, I think it is the other way around..;) Born Free will never win as they will never abolish Zoos, or even seriously affect them in anyway. They are largely just a mouthpiece and since their inception I can't see that they have had any major affect on Zoos in this country.

It's a good thing too hehe.:)

Looking back I think the reporter should of instead said:"did you know a zoo and wildlife forum thinks you should have the lions in a larger enclosure somewhere else and convert this area for your gelada baboon group?"

Sorry couldn't resist that.;)

However Anthony did answer very bravely to this question, I guess the reporter has more sympathy for Born Free...
