Wellington CIty Council is doing a consultation about its long term plan which can be joined at click here

Someone has left a comment calling for the zoo to be closed and calling it a Victorian Anachronism click here to see comment

Couldn't this be a chance to actually upgrade the zoo - promote it as a tourist attraction. Imagine how many visitors come to Singapore for their zoo?

this is the comment referred to above:
We can save a fortune by getting rid of the Zoo. If Wellington did not have a zoo there is no way we would invest the money is setting one up. We should close the zoo and develop the land into accommodation and sports fields. The council would reap a massive financial windfall, gain valuable space for sport or other cultural projects and reclaim some moral high ground by moving on from this Victorian anachronism.
typical NZ attitude - get rid of (in this case) the zoo and replace it with "valuable space" for sports fields!

Why not get rid of any museums and art galleries too!
That way the city can really save money!
Close the public parks and sell them off for farmland. That's progressive too.......

Not for farmland - accomodation! Or more sports fields!

Obviously not a zoo person. Mind you, I haven't seen Wellington Zoo, but I'm sure it's not a Victorian anachronism. (Maybe he's one of the nutters from that Animal Welfare mob targetting NZ's only circus elephant).

funny thing is that Wellington Zoo is mostly built on hills (as is most of Wellington), so the sports fields would be somewhat slanted. :)

Not just Nz attitude either. What gets me is that sports is always 'valuable' but other cultural activities are not.How about instead of sports it could be parklands?

first of all they will never close the zoo......least not after recent investments in infrastructure..
turn the zoo into accomodation. great idea except that in doing so your deleting what could be a major tourist attraction. go figure genius.
typically councils and governments around the world dont close public institutions and then spend money redeveloping them on public space.
what would typically happen is this land would be sold to developers who would keep some green space, develop the rest and wellington would lose a major cultural and tourism asset and the country and its wildlife an increasingly important conservation agent.

He already got his sportfields, in the shape of a caketin..!
