Chester Zoo Sumatran orang utan born!

Chester Lar Gibbons are as you say a pair and their 2 male offspring, they came from Chessington were i believe all 3 males had the snip so breeding is out of the question,as far as i understand they got them to gain experience with a none endangered species of Gibbon before getting something a bit more intresting.

Well that contradicts what i have heard, I heard they went for lar gibbons because there numbers are quite high in captivity. So that any accident with the orang-utans wouldn't really matter.

Breeding of Bornean Orang Utans was purposely halted while ROTRA was under construction. Now that it is finished and there are two males, I'm sure it will not be long before baby Borneans can be seen.

I would forecast future offspring from Sarikei and Leia, to be fathered by Tuan. They could (note; could, not are!!) already be pregnant.

Martha is probably too old now, while Sibu is related to the 3 current females.

The gibbons and orangutans were not seperated on my last vist (Feburary 17th). I Saw two orangutans inside and one gibbon inside (not together) and one orangutand and two gibbons outside (togther) in the enclosure nearest to the Aquarium.

Well, that seems to me pretty much the same thing as using a non-endangered species to gain experience with....

father of Emma's new baby.

The website announcement says 'Puloh' is the father, not 'Padang'

On Zoo Days this week: Tuan integrated quickly and smoothly with all three females and has mated all of them. They are hoping for a batch of babies around the end of the year.

I think she was born in 1965 so is about 43. I don't know what the record for the oldest orang giving birth is, but I guess you might be right.

This is testament to the great orang exhibit that ROTRA really is. A Sumatran orang female baby and 2 babies for the Borneans now seem a matter of time (and I am still hopeful that Martha is breeding material even at 43 years of age). :D

Yes but the bornean orangutans are being house in the old house at this moment in time, I feel the exhibit makes them behave more natural and would of still continued to breed with out it!

Does anyone have any idea how many orangs could be held in ROTRA/old building at any one time (keeping in mind the gibbons are in there as well)?

I believe they can keep between 15-20 in the House plus the Gibbons bearing in mind the house was designed for a second group of Gibbons in their as well from what i`ve been told.

yeah it can be up to 20 Orangs. They specifically designed the house without seperation dens as to keep the group cohesive, so this gives more space in total.
