Any news about the Sumatran Rhinos at Cincinnati Zoo ? Is the female Emi pregnant again maybe ? The female offspring Succi, will she stay at Cincinnati, and what are the future plans for her ? They can't mate with her own father....

I 've visted Cincinnati in 2002, a keeper told me, that they have plans for a new exhibit for sumatran rhinos, any news about that plans ? And do the rhinos have anymore problems with the eyes, if the day is very sunny ?

The new Sumatran Rhino exhibit does not yet have a date (the zoo is still in a "quiet" fundraising phase). The exhibit will be a closed in atrium covering the whole, or most of, wildlife canyon.

The zoo does continue to have issues with eye problems. There are days the rhinos are not allowed to go out if it is too sunny, despite having the shade structures.

Maybe this is a 'quiet' phase too, with Suci still maturing and Emi still nursing Harapan- though I imagine Harapan may start the weaning process fairly soon now?

Does anyone know what the plan is for Suci now?

Would be interesting if they have formed a plan, because she will be wasted if they cannot get another male in.

Hopefully they can form a plan and Hopefully breed a new male with both females.

Harapan was born alst year, is that correct ? So I don't think, they had Emi together with Ipuh again. I've visetd Cincinnati in october 2002, at this time, Andalas, the first offspring, was 13 month old and they had seperated him from Emi to bred with hera gain, so maybe they will do the same with Harapan. But I think, its to early to seperate a rhino calf from its mother in this age, in nature, they stay with the mother two years.

You're very right...this is also in a quiet phase

In future, please start threads in the correct forum (United States in this case) and assign them to the appropriate zoo.

LA zoo are to receive the oldest young at some point soon I believe

I believe they started weaning Suci at a similar age(13 months) as they were obviously keen to get Emi in calf again a.s.a.p. On the webcam you could see Emi and Suci were in adjacent stalls and had contact through bars, so this was a physical, rather than psychological separation process. I imagine they will be equally keen this time to get Emi to resume oestrus again a.s.a.p. as the bull Ipuh is becoming increasingly aged now.

I thought they had also tried A.I. Emi at some point? Or am I mistaken?

The members of the now defunct AZA Sumatran Rhino Trust were San Diego, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Bronx, and Miami Metrozoo.

Some people in germany say, that Leipzig Zoo, who is building a huge tropcal hall for asian, african and south american species, is interested in sumatran rhinos, but it is very unlikly to get them. But some people say, if anyone in germany will did it, then it will be Leipzig. Now, we'll see.
