Sumatran Rhinos for the USA ?

This article has already been posted in the Cincinnati Zoo 2014 thread on the US Forum, where a little more discussion about it has taken place.

I must have missed that ...:( Sorry !

No harm in mentioning it again, IMHO. :). I'm sure I'm not the only person who wonders about mating Bornean animals (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrisoni) with Sumatran (D.s.sumatensis). Has any work been done to indicate just how different they are?

After all, these days the Orang-utans from the two islands are deemed separate species.

Its okay:)- I welcome all your 'news' posts and read a lot of them. It doesn't matter if someone else posted the same item somewhere else. It actually invites further discussion as not everyone can read everything everywhere.

I'm sure this wouldn't be considered with any species not so highly endangered. Its very much a last ditch effort. The talk in the article of Rhinos(plural) currently really only involves the single Bornean male in captivity(Kertam/Tam). And they are still trying to capture an identified isolated wild female to partner him with- in that case he may still not go to Cinci.

How different?- I don't now if any research is ongoing.

Back on subject, does anyone know how things are going between Andalas, Ratu and Rosa? Andatu is from 2012 so Ratu should be ready for another pregnancy soon I reckon, and how is Rosa coming along? She should be old enough by now to conceive, is she still very human-friendly and scared of Andalas?

I believe the two females are (roughly) similar-aged so Rosa should be breeding too by now. The fact she hasn't done so(yet) indicates the possibility of some compatability problem to me.

It seems to be either the same article, or contains the same information, as the previous one above.
