Sumatran Tigers in Europe

Zoja from Sosto was transferred to the Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon (France) recently, she joins the male Sayang but no breeding in sight for the moment.

Do you know about Jarum who was moved to La Teste from Arnhem in 2021?

In general I wonder if we will see a lot more breeding in the near future. There has been lots of breeding activitiy in the recent years and the number of old sumatran tigers is pretty low. Without new holders I don't really see a bigger need for offspring in the next few years.

There was so much offspring recently that I wonder where they want to place them. I would not wonder if breeding comes to a hold for a while. Berlin Zoo getting two females might be an indicator for this.

Births in the recent years:
Heidelberg 0.3 in 2021 (now Fota, Nesles, Sosto)
Eskilstuna 0.1 in 2021 (now Attica)
Berlin TP 0.2 in 2022 (now at Berlin Zoo)
Le Pal 0.1 in 2022
Amiens 1.0 in 2022
Rheine 1.0 in 2022
London 2.0 in 2022
Krefeld 1.1 in 2022
Aalborg 0.0.2 in 2022 (if they still are alive...)
Frankfurt 2.0 in 2023
Heidelberg another 1.1 in 2023
Chester 0.2 in 2023

Total 8.11.2 from 2021 to 2023

Deaths of grown-ups during this time I think were 6.4 - and this already includes the handicapped 2.2 offspring at Berlin TP

Lotte and Luise have moved to Zoo Berlin to allow their parents to have another breeding attempt.

Mother, Mayang was born in Indonesia and is one of the most genetically important females within the EEP and GSMP. She was born in 2011 so is 12 years old this year. Father, Jae-Jae was born at San Francisco Zoo in 2008 so is even older. Because of their genetic value as a pair, any cubs from them are vital. Unfortunately with there advancing ages the EEP (and Tierpark) didn't feel it was worth the risk of waiting another 6 or 12 months to try breeding from them again. Hence space was available at Zoo Berlin so they took the opportunity and moved the previous cubs out as soon as possible. Both will be placed with suitable mates in other zoos (or perhaps one will stay at Zoo Berlin long term with a new male?) once they reach sexual maturity.

You are missing

Bewdley - 0.1 born 2023 (Lestari) from your list.

Le PAL are likely to ask to keep their 2022 cub (Sankha) has half of the next pair. It doesn't necessarily mean that she won't be recommended to move elsewhere though. Her father (Taru) is now 12 and her mother, Kinabalu is 16 so they won't be breeding again from them as a pair.

I do agree with you though that the next couple of years will be quieter for breeding recommendations given the success over the last 2 years. I expect a lot of moves within the next 12-18 months to place recent offspring and create new pairs

@Nisha: I meant Lotte/Louise as possible indicator since they are two tigers of the same sex, who stay together instead of pairing them with a male.

You can see Mayang from two sides. As import she provides with rare genes, this makes her interesting. Individually she doesn't have clean genes though, you will find lots of females in the EEP who have gone further through the bottleneck already. Jae-Jae already produced 7 cubs, so his genes are in the program.

Didn't know about Bewdley. Who is the mother? Nakal is the male, but I have Hujan and Dourga listed as females.

Le Pal - if they have enough enclosures. 12 is not a high age for a tiger. This is what I mean by saying that I don't know where to put all the offspring - the Sumatran tiger population is not old. If I am not mistaken the oldest ones alive are: *2002 0.1, *2003 2.0, *2004 0.2, *2005 1.4, *2006 0.2. Currently you have a pretty big surplus of births compared to deaths and expected deaths.

Lestari - Born 4/7/2023 to Dourga and Nakal. Hujan lives in a separate enclosure to them
