Perth zoo breeds a first for an Australian zoo with the birth of a female Sun bear

Nothing frustrates me more than the francios langurs at taronga. They have a beautiful exhibit. I just wish that Taronga could get another female or two. I really want to see that enclosure full of little orange babies.
Has anyone ever seen the langurs down near the waterfall? They seem to be always up the top corner when I go to see them.

What fantastic news

Here is some more information on the cub:

She was born at 9.00am on Wednesday 26 March 2008.

Her parents are Jamran (8) and Bopha (6). Both were rescued by Free The Bears Fund sanctuary in Cambodia after they were taken from the wild illegally as cubs by people.

She has been named Maly (pronounced 'Mahlee') which means 'Blossum' in Cambodian.

She is expected to remain with her mother until she is independant at two


Maly is the first cub born in Australia. The last cub born in the Australasia region was in September 2006 at Wellington Zoo, a female cub called Susa.

yes I have frequently seen the francois langur down near the waterfall, though the best I have ever seen them was my last visit in the April school holidays when a keeper was feeding them through a safety cage down near the viewing area.
Unfortunately, acquirring more Francois Langurs is going to be a long and drawn out process due to difficulties in obtaining animals from China.

This is great news for the species, I hope one day sun bears will be plenty full in Western zoos, Many zoos in South east asian keep them, but not many have successfull breeding programs,
