Hie all...
I am a student of sustainable environmental design with a background of building design and come from Assam, India.I have always wanted to contribute my knowledge so far in my passion for animals and their habitat but haven't got a chance. I know a little about zoo, very little I must say but am very much interested in understanding how these various species from all around the world from different climates are brought in together in a single place. To design and create these spaces which are similar to their home habitats must be a difficult task. Its almost like designing nature.
My interest is to know how this can be achieved in a sustainable way and how it is being done in the existing one.
At present I am learning sustainable principles for building design based on occupants comfort and lifestyle pattern. For my thesis I would like to do something in similar line but for the non human animal. I am sure to be criticized for it but yes I am really eager to know about the comfort of animals in captive and how we as designers can contribute to it through sustainable design.Basically I am interested to design micro-climates suitable for such animals in places with climates different from their own.
To start with and be more specific with the study i am thinking of doing a research about the Indian Rhino, their habitat , thermal comfort etc. Right now its condition in Assam is really bad due to poaching. I thought I could do some field and literature studies of few rhino enclosures in Europe zoos to see how they work and if the enclosures are suitable for the animals comfort and compare with their original habitat.
Then I would like to come up with a sustainable design typology or a prototype for enclosure and exhibit design with guidelines based on the micro climate suitable for the one horned rhino which is climate specific to the different zones of the world.
I know a design is site specific but then I have been having this idea in my mind and thought it would be worth sharing it here. Would be glad to know what you think about it. Its like am trying to design a home and this home could be repeated in any other part of the world without compromising the comfort of the occupant which in my case is the "RHINO".
I really need to know what the animal lovers think about it . Please do reply.
