Swarm of killer grasshoppers hits California! (Grass killing, that is).

Perhaps not quite a biblical plague, a swarm of grasshoppers has descended upon a town in rural California.

Has anybody here ever witnessed a swarm of grasshoppers or locusts?

Yeah, I think it was late 2010 in northern Victoria there was a huge locust plague - I mean like biblical. We drove through a few small swarms, and the front grill of my car was clogged with dead/dying locusts. In fact, most people who live there (or were visiting) had a fine wire mesh over the front of their cars. It turns out that the dead locusts stop the intake of air through the front grill, thereby causing your car to overheat and breakdown.

Anyway, I had to stop on the side of the road a few times after passing through the swarms to remove dead locusts from my grill. Mind you, not all of them were dead. Eeek! Oh, I forgot to mention that in a really large swarm, it is difficult to see through your windscreen, and many locusts get splattered on your glass; using your wipers just makes the glass even dirtier. All in all, locusts and cars don't mix.

Here is a very short video of my backyard in 2010. A swarm arrived and ate our lawn back to the ground. They then moved on and the lawn started to grow back. About 10 days latter another swarm came through and ate it back again, which killed it.
