Wild Life Sydney Sydney Wildlife World

Might this exhibit not have been a good one to exhibit the more conservation dependent freshwater crocs or the particular ssp. from NT?

Other than that: I think the exhibit looks great.

Evening folks.

Some new photos from this afternoon here:

Kakadu Gorge | Sydney Wildlife World

Rex is settling in incredibly well. He's been very active and is incredibly inquisitive.

The attraction opens tomorrow, so we look forward to welcoming you down there. Sunrise on Channel 7 is live from Sydney Wildlife World all morning tomorrow, so you can get a sneak preview if you're up early enough to watch it.

Yeah, the water is climate controlled.

The glass is about 2 inches thick, and it's been specially designed to minimise distortion. You don't get the 10% variation in perspective that you get with most underwater exhibits.

I guess you can feed this guy year round in the warm water and keep his growth going for a bit more size :D

apprently theres special on it called "operation croc" screening next sunday night :) looking forward to seeing this big boy being fed!

"Operation Croc" is screened "tonight" 27/12/09 on channel 7 (Brisbane) at 8.10

Should be interesting

Had a sneaky preview of the program - it's a good watch.

No feeding scenes yet though, folks. He might have a feed next week, which is a lot sooner than expected, because he's settling in so well.

The tv guide said he was only 4 metres long .

Have they added the Rainbow fish yet and are they adding any Catfish ?.

Oh any new pics yet of the baby Golden possom :D

Yeah, it says 4 and a half metres still. Hmm.

He's just over 4.8 metres, for the record :)

And yeah - we did manage to get a couple of quick shots of the Golden Possom the other day. He's grown a lot! Didn't recognise him.

He's doubled size in a very short space of time.

Hoping to get back into the enclosure with him soon to get some better pics - the shots above were taken through glass without a flash.

And in answer to the question about the fish - they've not been introduced yet, but they will be any day soon I believe. The finches are already in there.

Also in response to another question raised earlier in the thread, there are plenty of branches and limbs poking out from the rocks throughout the Kakadu Gorge enclosure - it's not just the palm trees where the birds can perch.

Thanks for the info, I have looked at the SWW website to see what animals are on display but I guess it's just an overview of whats there, Is it possible to put up a list here if its not asking to much trouble of you, oh, what other possoms are there, any feather tails? Thanks

We'll be working on a A to Z factfile list in the new year. We probably won't get a factfile written for every single animal, but I'm thinking we'll probably have a full list of the animals and the ones which we prepare a factfile for will allow you to click through to a page of info, together with photos and possibly some footage too.

The A to Z factfile list sounds good along with some photos for ID for the public.

Just saw "Operation Croc" on the tv, it was worth the look, Rex appears to be a great looking animal and at only 35 years of age may grow a bit more yet. It should look even better when all the Rainbow fish are added to the exhibit, would Turtles be ok in the exhibit as well?.

It seemed about 1/3 rd of the show was taken up with adds which broke up the story a bit.

I don't think we'll be adding turtles any time soon, just because he's so feisty. We're still learning about his temperament, but suffice to say he's made himself very much at home and is 0% shy.

We weren't planning on feeding him for quite a while, but because he's settled so well we're actually going to try him on some food tomorrow.

I'll let you know how it goes, but if anyone's in Sydney tomorrow the feed attempt is planned to happen during open hours, although nothing's set in stone.

Hi.

Things went well, yeah. We had a huge crowd in and Rex was very active during the feed. He didn't actually take the food down, but he showed an interest by writhing it around and generally playing with it. He's probably still adjusting to his new enclosure and so not quite ready for a feed yet, but we're confident he'll eat any day now, which is still much sooner than we had anticipated initially.

A few pics here:
