Tama Zoo Tama Zoo News

A Chinese red panda (ssp. styani) was moved to Batu Secret Zoo in Indonesia. The male offspring "Kite" was transferred recently. The Japanese zoo population for Chinese red panda (Ailurus fulgens styani) and 4.8.

I personally wonder how the styani part of the Japan zoo population is doing and how their genetics, relatedness and sustainability. I believe there is also still a nominate Himalayan red panda (fulgens),

Another male red panda "Fujimaru" from Tama zoo will be moved to Batu Secret Zoo too. The zoo planned to transfer Fujimaru and Kaito (aka Kite) at the same time, but Fujimaru got injured at his leg and tail while playing with twin. The zoo decided to send Kaito to Batu Secret Zoo first (※now he has no lasting health problems)

Fujimaru will be exhibited at Tama zoo till 30th August, and will move to Indonesia on 30th September.

Is this the only one in Japan or are there more in private collections?
Tama is the only collection holding them and the invasive species ban makes it illegal to people to privately keep them.

In other news. The zoo announced today that staff found a dead 0.1 baby mole on July 11 2023. This would be the first time this species has been captive bred.

Happy but sad at the same time. Also, how old do you assume the possum is? Is it the only one Tama Zoo keeps or is there another one backstage?

1.1 Eurasian otters from Seoul Grand Park will be transferred to Tama Zoological Park, expected as early as April this year.

JAZA currently manages three Eurasian otter lines:

1. L. l. lutra (A-line): Purebred European line.

2. L. l. lutra (B-line): Not a purebred European line; contains genes from the Southeast Asian subspecies (to be phased out after the A-line population stabilizes).

3. L. l. chinensis: Only 1.1 remain in Japan, and this line will also be phased out.

The otters from Seoul belong to the L. l. lutra subspecies but are genetically distinct from the European line, so they must be managed as a separate East Asian line. They cannot breed with the three lines in Japan. The A-line has recently had two successful breedings at Zoorasia, and with the import of a female from Warsaw Zoo, the future looks promising. It's unclear why Tama is importing otters from a different genetic line.

An 8-year-old male European wolf from Tierpark Hexentanzplatz has arrived at Tama for breeding purposes. I find it strange that such an old individual was chosen. Are local subspecies of wolves in European zoos not that abundant? I know that at least the population is managed under the EEP.

Iberian wolves are managed under EEP not other European wolf variants/subspecies. It doesn´t mean that "plain" European wolves are rarely kept in local zoos, but there was a marked decrease in production of cubs in recent decade. It was a reaction to a glut of available young animals that became hard to impossible to find new homes. Getting a young male should be doable. Tama might have its reasons to import 8-years old animal we are not avare of - like for example it couldn´t find other place that would be willing to undergo paper war to prepaire an animal for export to Japan? (pure speculation)

There is already a separate EEP for grey wolves that are not Iberians. But given the origin, a non-EAZA zoo, of the individual in Tama, it is likely not an EEP wolf anyway.

It looks like I dont keep up with news about creation of new EEPs.

EDIT: I found a news report about departure of the wolf Kajolan to Japan. And it has following text:
" Wolf from Thale Zoo moves to Japan
It was once considered a deity by the Japanese, but the wolf has been extinct there since the beginning of the last century. Now it is to be resettled. For this purpose, an animal from Thale is being brought to Japan."

Is Japan seriously thinking about reintroducing (European) wolf into its nature? Or is it a misunderstanding and Japan only wants to start a captive zoo population.
