ZSL London Zoo Tapirs at London

The Tapir house closed about a year ago when the last calf was born. I wonder whether the death of the previous okapi calf made them even more cautious with the next tapir baby. The tapir house was open fairly soon after the first tapir breeding in 2004 though.

ISIS still lists 2.1, I would expect movements to take place soon though.

Tapir house has been closed for some time due too the male Tapir having a medical condition so a member of staff told me this weekend on enquiring. Though he was unsure of what the medical condition was, but he was feeding the Tapirs so surely he would know? Or didn't want too say.

I believe it a similar zoonotic virus to what the female Malayan Tapir at Twycross has!!

If it is a virus though wouldn't they have moved it from the house so the other Tapirs do not catch it? and if it is a virus it last bloody ages!

If it is the same as Twycross then all the Tapir`s have it and the house is shut to protect the visitors from it,as it doesn`t seem to affect the animals health.

Would this also then suggest the male would not be allowed outside? Does anyone know what this virus is? Are the others vaccinated? Or is he separated from them permanently? The indoor tapir area at London is very large and I can imagine this being possible.

Viruses surely are caught air born though so they would move the male away from the group in case of spreading to the mother and calf? Plus would a virus really last nearly 6 months?

Ive I think it might have fractured a bone or something? Would explain why the house is closed as they don't want the animal to fright and also explains why the other Tapirs are still allowed in the house but thats just my guess.

Not every virius has a vaccination that can be given to cure it,as for if the others have it I would say more than likely yes they do have it.As for what it is not a clue all I was told is it is a Zoonotic Virius.

Thanks for all this information I don't know if the zoo will reply to my enquiry it will be interesting to see what they say if they do reply
