, The two stillborn calves that Emmet sired in 2002, I think I am correct in stating that these were twins, Anna was the mother who tragically died as a result, on the bright side(if you can call it that) of Tara's calf being stillborn is the fact that Tara herself is O.K, as has previously been posted stillborn calves to first time mothers are not uncommon, Tara is still a young lady and has plenty of years ahead of her to produce fit healthy babies. As well as it being a sad loss to the elephants and their keepers, please don't think I am being merciless but I would also consider it to be a financial loss to the zoo, after the great expense of the A.I. treatment a baby elephant would have been a great draw to the zoo on the imminent Easter holiday period, providing much needed finances during these cash strapped days, alas this was not to be,I have always taken a great interest in the elephants in U.K. zoos,and a special interest in Tara and Karishma who I have watched grow from babies since they were born in 1998, better luck next time Tara.I would say that's just being realistic.
It is very bad luck for them and a very sad event on various counts;
That it was stillborn
That it was female too.
That it would have been the perfect 'start of the season' draw for them.
That it was the first calf of the Woburn bull.
Some of those can be rectified with time but not the loss of an elephant baby for this year.
