Yep! The long beaked echidna was attracting alot of attention from visitors, as it was feeding at the front of the exhibit. The rufour owl was curious at first (the echidna had just had it's food put out) but then continued to pluck some leaves off a branch. Both were no less than a metre away!
 
I haven't been to a zoo for so long, hearing about this makes me want to visit taronga

Alot of developments have happened!

I also noticed yesterday how much detail was put into the whole of Wild Asia. I never noticed some cultural objects or even the fake researcher hidden amongst the leaves near the chital deer/binturong viewing area!

I hope eventually this whole complex can be added to with exhibits for Sumatran tigers, orangutans, komodo dragons, sun bears (although maybe when Beranin the Malayan tapir eventaully dies they could fill the pool in to create a nice exhibit for them), and link them with the himalayan thar and snow leopards! But this is only my dream! :p

RED PANDA NEWS:
According to a new blog post on the website, Taronga is looking to find a female to pair with the male 'Seba' (born December, 2010 at Taronga). There is also mention of his dad 'Mayhem' but no mention of his mother 'Wan Mei'.

Did anything ever happen with this? They are still shown on the map. Was it just a temporary maintenance move?
 
Dinosaurs

The dinosaurs will go on display at Taronga Zoo on November 2nd, and it looks like they will be scattered through the Australian wildlife side of the zoo, rather than clumped in one location (which I think would have been better).

-Muttaburrasaurus (in entry plaza)
-Allosaurus (by nocturnal house)
-Triceratops (gardens by spider monkeys)

-Compsognathus (near Tasmanian devils)
-Tyrannosaurus Rex (?)

THERE'S a new animal voice among the roars of lions and the laughs of kookaburras at Taronga Zoo.

Twenty-one dinosaurs have come to life, thanks to the wonders of animatronics. The computerised system of compressors that drives the zoo's Dinosaurs In The Wild exhibit were turned on yesterday, bringing the exhibition to life.

The animatronic creatures are now rearing and twisting, adding their roars and hisses to the zoo's usual noises thanks to special compressors that pump very dry air into the dinosaurs' hydraulic mechanisms hidden under their life-like skins.After a night at the zoo under its educational sleepover program ZoosnooZ, school students yesterday got the first look at the whole of the exhibition.

"It's great to see the reactions of kids when they see these amazing prehistoric creatures moving and making sounds," Dinosaur keeper, Gillian Markham, said.

"Their faces say it all. I think it's bringing out the inner child in the adults too."

Among the classic dinosaurs scattered around the zoo, like a four metre high Tyrannosaurus Rex, is a striking Dilophosaurus with its prominent red crest which spits water at those who are game enough to get close.

And there's even a prehistoric Australian at the Zoo - the Muttaburrasaurus, named for its discovery site in Queensland, relaxes under a giant fig tree and has one of the loudest voices of all.

Sydney road trip no pain in the neck for giraffe - Yahoo!7 News

A giraffe has arrived at its new home at Sydney's Taronga Zoo after being trucked around 400 kilometres from Dubbo in western New South Wales.

Kitoto left Taronga's Western Plains Zoo this morning in a custom-made crate, with a police escort leading the way.

The two-year-old was born in the Dubbo zoo and will join the existing Sydney herd of two females giraffes and a male called Jimiyu.

Taronga spokesman Mark Williams says Kitoto was curious to take in her surroundings as she travelled through towns such as Orange, Bathurst and Lithgow.

"She has a look from time to time. The way her travelling container has been constructed, it's got an open viewing window at the back," he said.

"Obviously you wouldn't want the wind roaring in from the front, but she's able to have a look out anytime it takes her fancy.

"I'm told a lot of people along the way have seen her peering out as she goes along."

Zoo officials say Kitoto had to be taken to Sydney now before she became too tall to pass under bridges and overpasses.

She was initially meant to make the journey yesterday but refused to get into her crate because it was raining.

The latest version of the zoo map shows the positions and types of dinosaur on display. There are 21 in total.

The only other difference I could see was that the bear exhibit is now labelled 'Sun Bears', rather than 'Bears' when the two species were present.

Has anyone seen any progress on the new lemur exhibit? Has anything even started there? Also, what has become of the exhibit the lemurs were in (previously home to the De Brazzas)?
 
I last visited 2 months ago, and there was plenty of very noisy construction going on for the new lemur exhibit back then.
The DeBrazza/Lemur exhibit was just being used as an extension of the Gorilla exhibit.
 
Veiled chameleon are now housed with scheltopusik. Pacific ground boa are now displayed in the former veiled chameleon enclosure.

Ghost bat are now back on display in the last exhibit of the nocturnal house. Short beaked echidnas are also displayed next to the long beaked echidna with I thing ringtail possum and long nosed potoroo (I am not positive on these species though).

New Caledonian giant gecko also back on display inthe nocturnal house across from the long beaked echidna exhibit.

One section will try to replicate a forest-type environment (trying to show the lemur's natural habitat) while the other section will be what the same forest looks like but with human intrusion (logging, pollution, etc) and a picnic area at the end. This is as far as I know.

Sorry to revive this but I wish Lemur Forest Adventure actually turned out like this.....instead it looks like the lemurs have managed to find themselves in a suburban park with all the steel, playground, etc!!!
