Taronga Western Plains Zoo Taronga Out West

ohhhhh yuk!!!

but why am i not even remotely surprised?!!!!

there is only one thing worse than the name Taronga Western Plains Zoo (although the now defunct Vitoria's Open Range Zoo at Werribee was worse!) and thats the new logos!!!

the foundation logo is actually the same logo as the taronga logo and as per usual they saved the bodgiest job for poor old western plains.

as a designer it is disgusting and very amatuerish. you would think such an organisation throwing cash around like taronga would at least hire a decent agency....

but the word taronga means water veiws in the local aboriginal language so how can you have a zoo esentially called the water veiw western plains zoo in the middle of the bush were as far as im aware at least now during the drough the 'water veiws' are serveirly lacking.

i also dont like the new logo very much becuase the platapus looks kinda strange as do the girraffe and the fluro green is too bright.

i give it like 6 months before the taronga at the front of western plains zoo is dropped becuase the name is just too long!

Too true Torie. they only water views at WPZ is the lake that holds the monkey Islands and a few moats.

does the new name mean that we have to change the title of the subheading for western plains zoo under the australian/new zeland zoos section?:p

however I dont think that a new name and a fancy new logo is going to be enoguh in the long run to build turist numbers. but maybe combined with more info about dubbo and more updates about dubbo on the website and the new series called the zoo that will feature on chanel 7 later on in the year and features storys about taronga and dubbo.

dead right Torie. the name change is terrible. i like the conservation thing but TARONGA WESTERN PLAINS ZOO is just too long, particularly for a society obsessed with shortening things right down to acronyms. im sure that communications professionals thought that cosying WPZ up with Taronga was a smart move for brand recognition and marketing but i bet that the cost of coming up with this bull **** plan will not even result in abig enough rise in visitor numbers to offset its production. and then it will be dropped!

Dubbo's tourism numbers may be boosted in the coming years with council talking to a number of major airlines to discuss the possibility of having discount flights from Sydney and melbourns direct to Dubbo, It lready has a busy little aiport and they are talking about making room for jets so the likes of Jetstar and Virgin can provide cheap, quick transport to Dubbo. hopefully this might boost numbers a bit. five hours in a car is a whole lot less in a jet, in fact it'd take less than an hour. Maybe the zoo shuld start talking to the airlines and offer discounted tickets for passengers or a shuttle direct from the aiport to the zoo/Dubbo. Just a thought

yes we can complain, even if the people from taronga zoo do monitor this forum causing some people to watch their mouths.
i still think the idea is silly and will be dropped in the future as it is too unwieldly. its kind of like how the Bronx Zoo changed its name to WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL-BRONX. too long. it might reflect the changing direction that the zoo community is taking but at the end of the day, as Guy Cooper pointed out most zoo visitors only see the 'tip of the iceberg'. i have often commented that this is the case, and as such I would argue that reinforcing the zoos mission with tangible, in-zoo links including greater information and more signage would be a more effective approach.
around Taronga a number of signs have began to pop up in recent years which do represent this argument of mine. one of these is the new Snow Leopard sign which talks about the global zoo breeding program. more information like this would go a long way towards changing attitudes.
when it comes to increasinf revenue for WPZ it would seem a little ironic that the future growth of a conservation institution is closely tied to domestic air travel but at the end of the day, its for the best i suppose.

I dont knw where to write this o i hope this is the right thread but CHECK OUT THE ZOOS WEBSITE!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT HAS CHANGED AND NOT JUST A LITTLE LIKE T NO LONGER LOOKS ANYTHING LIKE THE OLD ONE!!!!!!!!!!

It's fantastic, now it is defintally one of the best sites in the world! (IMO) Great job, hopefully the new name and zoo direction will continue to diliver such great suprises, especially bigger ones!

i think the website is great. it looks really profesional and dubbo finally has the recognition it deserves. the site does still have some kinks though like some of the links go no where and in the animals by continent search for Taronga it lists meerkats as an asian species but one they comb out thoses issues its going to be awsome!!
