Just a tip for those wanting to visit Taronga -

The next two weeks are the best time to visit the zoo (during the week is better than the weekend).

The holidays are over, the schools have gone back, but they have not had time to organise school excursions to the zoo. You will only have to contend with predominantly overseas tourists, families with small children too young for school, and university students who don't go back to uni for another month.

Usually, February has good weather too but I won't make any predictions about that!

I couldn't agree with you more Hix.

I visited Taronga the thursday before Australia Day and although I expected crowds it really impacted on my experience of the zoo. . . I last went to the zoo in 2004 for school work experience and although alot has changed (ele's were still being built) I am not sure I can see where all the money has been spent. personally, with the massive number of visitors I felt a little overwhelmed.

However I will be hoping to get back when the zoo is a bit quieter. My favourite zoo is Taronga Western Plains. I'm a country boy so I'm just not comfortable in the city anyway. I like the open spaces, not having to push through 4 million people to see the bum of a baby elephant.

But if I can I will go back soon.

its the perfect time not just to go to taronga, but all zoos. (with the exception of melb zoo as the baby elephant is a huge drawcard regardless of the time of year). speaking of when to visit zoos, what do you think is a good time to visit a zoo. i prefer early morning when only a handful of people are arriving.

Immediately after the zoo opens on a Tuesday.

but those crowds were SO BAD that it has put me off taronga for life!

Well, you can't say I didn't warn you! I posted the below comments mid-December.

A small tip to anyone in Sydney - anyone wanting to visit Taronga should do so within the next two weeks (during the week, not on the weekend). Everyone is out queueing to pay for Christmas gifts, so few go to the zoo. Once schools wrap up for the year there won't be any school groups either.

I'm not suggesting the zoo will be empty, because it won't be. But it won't be too crowded either. Only a few thousand per day (and a good deal of them will be Zoo Friends and the Mosman Mums with their strollers). It will remain like this until Christmas Day.

Christmas Day will have about 3,000 people. Boxing Day onwards will be 5,000+ daily until the end of January. The peak is the second week of January when - if it's sunny and warm - there could be 10,000 pax visiting. Sunday the 10th is likely to be the worst.
