i just assumed that the only way you could persuade someone to refrain from posting on the forum is by reminding them that their words might damage their job or future job prospects.

Zoo_Boy was one of the most obsessed zoo freaks ever. I haven't heard anything about him since he stopped posting. if he is working in a zoo or at least with animals I am more then happy for him.
Boof: as far as new constructions go (as part of the master plan) you didn't mention the entire ASian Precinct (elephants, aviaries, otters, fishing cats, langurs, binturongs and the restaurant/food outlet etc.), or the condors, or the refurbishment of the Moore Park Aviary, or the current redevelopment of Cats of Asia (for Tassy Devils).
But otherwise it was a pretty good synopsis.
Urmumzagoat: Tahr Mountain was built in 1928. Despite being an old concrete structure, it is ideal for the mountain goats and they usually produce at least two or three young at the end of each year. Which is great for Christmas, as the public love to watch the little ones jumping around the cliff face with apparent suicidal intent.
Where the Mountain is located it doesn't interfere with any views of the harbour (except at one point on the waterhole where the path was designed for mountaintop viewing). Why would the zoo want to built something that big and expensive and obtrusive somewhere else in the zoo?
Ara: I may have misunderstood the conversation but to my recollection, the last hyena at Taronga lived in a grotto that eventually became part of the current Kodiak enclosure. The hole in the ground that now houses Sun Bears originally housed Black Jags and possibly some other cats. Back in the '70's there was a concrete floored metal cage that also housed jaguars and other cats - it was demolished in the early 80's when the waterhole was created.

Getting too deep for me!!! I mentioned "rumours" and asked whether similar pressures to those that had been rumoured at the time may have been brought to bear on him to stop posting here.
Why? No idea.
Maybe the rumours were completely inaccurate.
Maybe he's too busy studying, maybe he's got married, maybe he's overseas - who knows?
I do know that I miss his well informed [usually] posts - even though I didn't always agree with him.
a great example of just how lost in the past the big zoos are is the fact that despite our constant criticism of them here on the forum they have never installed a official presence. social media is a powerful tool, most big companies have realised that and work it to their advantage. telstra and other companies frequently have reps that post on IT forums on behalf of the company.

i actually don't really support big zoos in their current form at all. i think they are rather boring, archaic, unproductive, i dare say unethical institutions, that have largely latched onto the conservation/education argument to justify their continued existence.
the sad thing is i don't think they need to be that way. i think like any government funded bodies they pour ridiculous amounts of money down the drain, and should that money be better spent, australian zoos in particular could have very easily made a transition into something much more modern and productive.
i know i say it a lot, but it all came back to those elephants and those crappy exhibits they built them. it showed no foresight, no understanding of modern expectations and set them continuing down the same path rather than diverging into something new.
